They were neighbours.
The boy was younger than he could ever remember being.
The man was older than he would ever want anyone to know.
The boy was struggling to remove the lid from a bottle.
The man offered to show the boy an easy way to do it.
The boy gave the man the bottle.
The man tapped the top.
He handed the bottle back to the boy.
The boy easily twisted the top off.
Wide-eyed, the boy thanked the man.
Before that tap of the bottle, neither had spoken to each other.
After that tap, neither spoke to each other.
Only that once.
The man died that same week.
The boy, now older than the man was then, never forgot him.
Nor how to easily remove a top with a tap.
But now, I thank him, for showing me, even once endures.
