40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Beloved brothers and sisters,
With the world in such a chaotic state one wonders have the church fallen a sleep? The above scripture text references when Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane sorrowful and deeply distressed and he ask the disciples, “Stay and watch with me.” Only to come back from prayer and find them sleeping. Is the church sleeping during this time of sorrow and distress in people lives? I raise the question to focus on the importance of “Watching” Jesus did the praying and he ask the disciples to do the watching just for one hour and they failed. Could this be the hour that the church should be watching and praying instead of sleeping? What did Jesus mean when he instructed the church to watch…let’s examine Matthew 25:13 where it reads,” Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming”. When one is in a state of watchfulness they are alert and in preparation for an event or some type action to take place. Therefore, Jesus has instructed the church to be alert and be prepared for his return. Jesus gave a parable of the Wise and Foolish virgins which demonstrates how the church should be positioned to watch for His return. Even though all ten virgins were asleep when the master returned but 5 was prepared with oil in their lamps and the other 5 the scripture referred to as foolish had no oil and the lamps had gone out. Have the church lamp went out…is there oil in your lamp? How can one tell…I am glad you asked. In a dark world, light is easily identifiable…in your church is the Holy Spirit present, are the gifts of the Holy Spirit being manifested, the bible declares where the Spirit of Lord is there is liberty. Are there ministries of good works such as poor people being clothed and feed, the homeless being housed, the substance abusers being healed and delivered, people being saved and set free? Is the Kingdom of God principles being taught. A sleeping church is were law and grace is intertwined, a sleeping church is were traditions of men is taught, a sleeping church is a luke warm church which will not take a stand against the ills and evils of society becuase of their non-profit status, a sleeping church is where people congregate to be seen instead of coming together to see Jesus. Know this, that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost…you are the church! Have you fallen asleep?
