“I have inherited Your testimonies forever, for they are the joy of my heart” [Psalm 119.111 NASB]
Most of us live in an environment where we are classified by our annual income or the area in which we live. However, David's inheritance and standing was measured differently.
No matter where we are in our spiritual lives, we can all benefit from having a mentor. Even if we are overseeing the spiritual life of another brother, it is always good to be accountable to someone else.
Every time I read this Psalm I am always influenced by David's faith, commitment and perseverance in the face of much adversity and this verse is no exception.
David's heart was single-minded. God's words and will were at the centre of his attention and the source of his joy.
This is the measure of the man who would make a good mentor for those who desire a more intimate walk with God. Therefore, this is the kind of person that God longs for you to be.
There are many people who, legitimately so, find the source of their joy in various activities and hobbies, however in David's case nothing of this world brought him either satisfaction or contentment.
Follow the example of the prophet's and be radically different. I cannot imagine Jeremiah looking anywhere else for understanding, meaning and fulfilment.
If this is also your desire, then seek out the man whose heart is irreversibly based on God alone. If, as is possible, you are unable to find him. Then, make it your aim to fulfil that gap and take many people with you to the only Source of joy and contentment. [David McArdle]
