Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday August 24, 2011
About 35 years ago I heard a speaker at a conference on Effective Psychology In Ministry state: "We often compensate our weakness by thinking, speaking or writing about the opposite." He was probably correct. Emerson wrote about this in his Compensation, since this article many a psych student has mentioned that weak minded people tend to study the mind.
On that note I admit to cowardice as I love to write, preach and simply talk about courage and the people who demonstrate courage.
I have a note before me that was written way back on September 8, 1997 from what is commonly called the hole in a maximum security prison. The confined felon told a story he had read about as best he could remember.
The note was written with 1.5 inch pencil on lined paper. He stated:
"I recall reading a story about Dr. Sheila Cassidy and found real help in gaining daily victory over my greatest enemy. I won't call his name but his initials are LML.
Dr. Cassidy worked as a medical doctor in Chile. She treated rich and poor alike, doing so in Christ's name. One night a seriously wounded man was brought to her. She worked on him through the night and saved his life. This is not the end of the story.
The man was a revolutionary. The Chilean Secret Service found out about Dr. Cassidy treating him and they arrested her and tortured her mercilessly. When asked about the incident she wrote: 'If we can come to want only what God wants, then we are in a way untouchable; for then loss of property, of good name, or health or even life holds no fear, for if that is what God wants, we will be at peace.'"
On the night prior to His crucifixion Christ prayed in Gethsemane's garden, "Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." Luke 22:42.
Once we truly resign ourselves to God's will we can then and only then have true inner peace that passes human understanding.
It is important to understand that most events in life that call for courage are not the last charge of the cavalry against all odds, but rather the living of a life that often seems more like Chinese water torture. No fanfare no thought of such a life being historic, but simply following in the will of Christ for us. Courage comes in different packages and if you are willing to be willing, the Lord will lead you to the one He has for you.
"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord." 1 Corinthians 15:58
