Sunday 8/21/11 Pastor Michael’s sermon=Get Over It: Overcoming Worry and Anxiety Mat 6:25-34, Phil 4:6-7

We as humans have challenges in our life, our body and soul. We are spiritual beings and we all want to be loved and feel secure in our lives. We all want to feel that we are reaching our fullest potential and personal growth. Most of us are still stuck on worrying about what we are going to eat or what clothes we are going to wear. People are taking drugs because they want to escape their dreary life with unemployment, foreclosures etc. etc.
Jesus talked to his disciples about the basic things like worry and anxiety over food and clothes. He gave them a lesson on what it means to walk as a Christian and not to worry. Worry and doubt inside us Christians gives us CONFLICT. There is conflict with whom you are looking at to supply your needs . Vs. 19-21 Storing up stuff, money etc is not going to stop our anxiety. Getting more does not take away worry! Our thinking things/stuff will take care of us creates conflict between that and our depending on God to take care of us. Are we trusting God or things we can do or get?
=Getting a new job
=Getting a new spouse>> Doesn’t take worry away!!
=Getting a raise
Jesus told the disciples that they had a problem because they worry about stuff. God promised to handle our basic needs, NOT our basic greeds ! Basic needs are food, clothes and shelter. We here in church have clothes on. We all have some pounds on us so the food is there. We all slept with a roof over our head last night too.
vs. 25-26 Jesus said that God believes we are worth more than the birds of the air and God takes care of them. The birds EAT! So God will have us eating too!! Some of us think because we’ve gone through hard times and are beat up we have no worth. Even though we are beat up and worn out like a old $20 dollar bill, we are STILL valuable because GOD SAYS SO!!! We are not to worry about stuff because God has us covered! God has already taken care of everything! Sometimes God will give us blessings we don’t deserve because He is a Loving Father!
Its like when we have a home security system. Each night before bed, we push a button or code and the security is on. If while we are in our bed asleep someone opens a window or a door, an alarm goes off . Then we receive a phone call from the security company. The security company calls us and we may say we just forgot and opened the window for some air. The security person on the phone still asks us for our passcode or they will call the police. If we tell them the wrong passcode, they will send the police to our own house no matter what we say.
In our time of anxiety and worry, we need to give out-say out loud our passcode……..JESUS!!! Once we say the name of Jesus, the intruders named worry and doubt, will have to LEAVE!!
JESUS IS OUR PASSCODE TO PEACE
Phil 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God. And the Peace of God which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
