For you know very well that the day the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
1 Thessalonians 5:2 (NIV)
Have you ever watched those old gangster movies where the names of the thieves were Bugsy, Mugsy, Boss, Fingers, Lefty, and other cool gangster names? Do you remember how before these thieves committed a robbery they would “case the joint?” They would always wait for just the precise moment to break in and steal the “loot.” Those were some fun movies and shows to watch, but eventually the good guys (the heat) would prevail and capture the thieves and throw them in the “slammer.”
Jesus too, will come like a thief in the night. We also know he is “casing the joint” for just the right moment. Are we prepared for his coming? Are we making disciples, are we fishing for people? He has sent out a warning and he has even told us how he would be coming. We don’t know the day or the time but we know there will be trumpets, clouds, angels and Jesus involved. He will come back to claim what is his. He will come back to claim this people, those still alive and those who the world considers dead. We need to be ready, we need to be following his commands, we need to stay strong in our faith, and we need to have our eyes fixed on him.
Preparation also involves prayer, meditation, studying and following God’s word in the Bible, faith and doing the will of God. What does Jesus see while he is “casing the joint?” Will he catch us ready or off guard? Vigilance is key, again here is the warning, he is coming like a thief in the night, be ready; he is coming, we are his loot.
