Having a form of godliness, but denying its power: from such turn away.
(2 Timothy 3:5 Webster)
How many people that call themselves true Christians and fill 99% of church pews fit the above scripture verse?
As I have traveled the vast landscape of Canada and America from East to west and North to South – this is what I have discovered. I have had many discussions with my wife about so called ministers with an earring or two, coffee and cola drinking in the main sanctuary can pops snapping during a mediocre sermon and even swearing (cursing) from behind the pulpit. From ‘worship’ leaders being dressed as if they were a runway diva from Victoria’s Secret, to having deep freezers in the sanctuary with people sitting on them and kicking the side during service and even a fifteen minute coffee break during the so called worship service.
The things I have seen and in some ways have shocked me at the lack of reverence and seriousness that people have as they walk into the house of the Lord. Sure the Church is to be within us, but as we forsake not the assembling of ourselves, (Hebrews 10:25) which simply means that we should meet together somewhere and be together in the Lord, especially since the last days are at hand, the church building should be kept in honor and especially the Lord our God reverenced at all times. This concerns how we dress; it concerns our personal hygiene, our shoes, everything.
I recall one church we visited the Pastor’s daughter ( I use that term loosely) came in the church, wearing a very short mini-skirt, flip-flops (which I detest) and sporting a hickey(sucking bruise) on her neck and then she proceeded to hug a man and I literally had to turn away to keep from seeing all else that she had. She was a late in years teen aged girl, not married and looked like she had just come from a night of being pimped out to the highest bidder and that would not surprise me if it were true – nothing more than dressed as a slut and then coming into the house of God and prancing around like a Kentucky race horse – ICHABOD!
We have seen drunks in church, we have seen Schizophrenics and heard them talking to their self, we have seen all manner of evil in what is to be the House of God and place of worship.
Now we move on to the other folk – you know, sister betty Lou better than you, or brother highly honored hypocrite who we can do nothing without – the folk who own the church so to speak, the well to do, elite, drive a better car than you, have a better house, hold a higher position on the board of the church maybe….the ones with the power, money and the doors are shut unless they are there. You know the kind – the ones who would rob you in a dark corner and then shout your name as a thief on the morrow – and swear that they saw the whole incident, when in fact there was none at all. They pray the loudest and all the while are saying the least, as it refers to truth.
They subscribe to a mere external show of religion, pretending great piety and holiness, being outwardly righteous before men, having the mask and visor of godliness; or else a plan of doctrine, a form of sound words, a scheme of truths, which men may have without partaking of the grace of God; and which, with respect to the doctrine of the Trinity, the church of Rome has; or else the Scriptures of truth, which the members of that church have, and profess to hold to, maintain and preserve; and which contains doctrines according to godliness, and tend to a godly life and godly edification: (Gill) revised.,
Though in words they profess religion and godliness, the fear of God, and the pure worship of him, yet in works they deny all; and though they may have a set of notions in their heads, yet they feel nothing of the power of them on their hearts; and are strangers to experimental religion, and powerful godliness: or though they profess the Scriptures to be the word of God, yet they deny the use, the power, and efficacy of them; they deny the use of them to the laity, and affirm that they are not a sufficient rule of faith and practice, without their unwritten traditions; and that they are not able to make men wise, or give them a true knowledge of what is to be believed and done, without them; and that the sense of them is not to be understood by private men, but depends upon the infallible judgment of the church or pope:
From such turn away; have no fellowship with them, depart from their communion, withdraw from them, and come out from among them:
All we can do is exactly what the Holy Spirit through the writer commands us to do – Turn away. Brother and or Sister in the Lord, allow me to say this. If you think that you can fix what the Holy Spirit says to turn away from, then we need to worship you and not God. If you think you can support the very works of evil and be blessed by the true Lord Jesus, then you have lied to yourself. If you think that you have to show up in that place and give your hard earned dollars to a dead work then you need to shake yourself free from traditions and guilt. The only thing that you will accomplish is a feeling of death in yourself.
A friend of mine said to me last week, “ I have felt dead for about the last Two Months, Spiritually no good for anything; I don’t know what has happened.”
Well, I know!
When a work is dead after a while, a hungry heart will notice it and feel drained, just as a battery in a car with a failed or failing alternator will drain down and eventually die and not be able to retain a charge. People are the same! Also , when the Holy Spirit is preparing you for a new work, a new refreshing, a new healing, a new moving and so on, He (the Holy Spirit) will either drain you or allow you to be drained so that the rot, filth and tradition and emotionalism will be flushed out of you , or else you will try to run on the same fuel you have used for years and simply you will have a break down as if you were a poorly cared for motor in an automobile. Most people take better care of their home or car than they do their own immortal soul. You are eternal, all else is temporal. Obey the Holy Spirit and again, if He cannot change these folk and says to leave – then why do you think that you as a poor human have an answer that He does not, He is God!
Pull away and allow yourself to be refreshed and renewed and make a difference in your life today. Stand for the truth instead of being and becoming as the others are. Do not run from one draining experience or place to another just so you can say “I went to church”. You will only hinder the Spirit from completing his work in you and to do that would mean living a fool’s hope.
