Days gone by with God

Y’know, if my life were a novel, some days I’m not so sure I’d turn out to be the hero. I have this banner I carry in the world, this credo that says I’m a Christian, I try to live a Christian life, and do what’s right in the name of God: I try to love. Yet this journey of “love” can be a very complicated thing. Sometimes, it has us travel down the side-roads of the map of life, taking ever smaller turnings, and getting stuck in dead-end streets, or cul-de-sacs. Places where we didn’t really want to go in the first place, but somehow, after a series of bad decisions about what we’ve done or wished or said… suddenly, there we are, back up against the fence again, in a position where we’re judging someone, or arguing with someone, getting deeper in distress, and forgetting all the while about what’s real in this world, the thing that really matters – its why we’re here, after all, and let’s not forget it folks – we’re here, because of love.
If we practice love properly, as Jesus taught us, then we become rich beyond all imagining. Every day is the brightest jewel, every night a treasure trove of shining silver stars. But more than this, we become rich in heart, rich in courage, rich in hope; rich in love. Love really is the best kind of virus. One kernel of love given freely, can spread so fast, it can change the pattern of a moment, of an hour, of a day, of a life, of a century. That, is what Jesus came to show us. He came to show us the power of love; He came to show us, to gift to us in no uncertain terms, that wondrous thing which makes every man rich, and no man poor. He came to show us how it’s done. He came to start a chain reaction, a light which kindles its fuse throughout the progress of the centuries, a light which in its shining, conquers all. And all we have to do, is remember that it’s there. At times it may be a little sleepy, a little buried, a little hassled, a little tired – but even a tired light can be revived. And maybe this is where we can turn our lives around, we can re-write the shadowed climax of that novel, and re-invent ourselves as heroes. Re-ignite that light! Write a letter saying you’re sorry, ask forgiveness for a wrong that you have done, go and give someone a hug – just because. Go out of your way to help someone today, smile, offer them some of Jesus’ love; help spread this wonderful, this God-given, this all-conquering bright virus (this many-gloried Love); and then maybe one day, when you’re going home again, back into His arms, you’ll look back on those days gone by with God, and you’ll say to yourself, now I understand the thing about the hero – he’s the one that puts down his shield and instead, brings the gift of Love. Love conquers all, you better believe it. Carry the light; re-ignite your faith in Him: be that shining hero for your God.
“We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4: 18-19.
