Not many of us get through this life without heavy-weight sorrow of one kind or another. It's just par for the course. But we have a choice as to how to bear it. Do we just give up and let it crush us? Or are there other better ways to handle it? A rejoicing heart can live and flourish in a broken and dysfunctional body, for example. It probably won't be easy, but it is possible, and it is a choice. Unlike the body, the spirit of man never dies.
And the mind, the third part of our make-up, if rational and undamaged by overwhelming experiences, can vote with the spirit instead of the broken body--and lo! We can have a rejoicing heart! What a victory! Or adverse circumstances can steal our most precious dreams. Again it's a choice, not easy, but a choice, OUR choice. So your dream didn't come true. Change dreams; there may well be a better one awaiting you. There are some things beyond the devil's reach to mess up. He can't touch a heart that is anchored in the Holy Spirit of Truth. It is impregnable by the grace of God. Has someone let you down, mistreated you? Don't hold a grudge. There is an ancient adage that says, Acid harms the vessel that holds it more than that which it's poured upon. Let it go.
The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God when we accept Christ and are baptized to symbolize His death, burial and resurrection. Acts 2:38 Our natural spirit then becomes subject to being led by the Spirit by a deep intuition that shows us the way if we are still and willing to listen. So when we are overwhelmed by difficulties of every stripe, we can wait patiently for the windshield wiper of the Holy Spirit to clear the way. The trials and tribulations of this life are reduced from mountains to molehills if we become putty in His hands.
"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again, Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God, and the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:4-7
Let's illustrate for the world what real joy is, that we believe in rejoicing hearts!
