As Americans we proclaim our freedom as citizens. Yes there is a sense of freedom in the fact that our Declaration of Independence states: (quote) We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — (end quote)
However, to enjoy and celebrate these rights, liberties and freedoms, many men and women have given up their freedom for ours. Many paying the ultimate cost in giving up their lives for our freedom.
Yet, in these United States of America thousands of men, women and children choose to live in bondage. No, they are not imprisoned by an institution. Many have never spent a night in a jail cell. Yet they remain bound.
They have the liberty to get up when they choose. They can go to bed when they please. They can go to and fro as often as they want. Yet they remain in bondage.
Invisible chains are wrapped around them. Covered by a veneer of success. A fake smile that hides a broken heart. Free to come and go, but not free to stop the self -destructive behavior that is destroying them from the inside out. Drugs and alcohol ruining their lives. A slave to sin and selfishness. Bound by the lust of want. They forever get, but never have enough!
What then is the answer to real freedom?
Joh 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
Joh 8:35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
Joh 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
The word ‘free’ in this passage means: ‘Unrestrained; liberated; not a slave;
1. Being at liberty; not being under necessity or restraint, physical or moral; a word of general application to the body, the will or mind, and to corporations (Webster’s dictionary)
Jesus is the only one that can set you free! Walking through the gates of a prison into the ’so called’ free world will not set you free!
Real freedom only comes through Jesus Christ who died on the cross, paying the ultimate price for our freedom!
1Co 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1Co 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1Co 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. (Emphasis mine)
Some people may look at us and think: “You Christians can’t do anything!” Yes we can, we could do everything we want, simply put. We do not want to! We have found that after repenting of out sins, and being baptized in Jesus name, and being filled with the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38) we do not need nor want to go back to the bondage of our sinful nature! Praise God we are free!
2Co 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
We have found in Jesus what we were looking for in drugs!
We have found in Jesus what we were looking for in Alcohol!
We have discovered what real freedom is!
