BABYLON HAS FALLEN.
By Henry Jaegers
Now this is the inscription that was written out: “MENE, “MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN”. This is the interpretation of the message: (Daniel 5:25, 26a)
The promise of God to Nebuchadnezzar has come to pass. We cannot but conclude it was by God’s mercy that it did not come until later and he did not have to see it happen. Belshazzar failed to own that experience through neglect and was now to experience that dreadful hour which would cost him his life and his kingdom. Let us now examine the interpretation of those words
MENE: God has numbered your days. They are shorter than you realize. There has been opportunity to change but you have refused, and so now the time is at hand. TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balance and found lacking. He has been place on a scale measured by the standard of God’s righteousness, and there is not an ounce of righteousness in him that would tip the scales in his favor. UPHARSIN; Your kingdom has been given over to the Mede’s and Persians. As promised an inferior kingdom to yours will now rule in your stead. Very shortly after Daniel announced the meaning of these words, Darius the Mede killed Belshazzar and took over the kingdom.
There is a very solemn message to all. Our days are also numbered and being faithful to God today will determine the quality of what our future reward will be. We do not know the number of our days but we can be faithful with what we have. Remember also that our rewards will be weighed on God’s true scale as opposed to how well we thought we have done. .”Without faith it is impossible to please him.” (Hebrews 11:6)
