Title of Today’s Story: Fighting Fighting
Date: 25th May 2011 (Wednesday)
Once upon a time in the city of Port Harcourt, there lived a young man name Tolu. He was handsome popular and a martial arts expert.
Tolu had always been interested in martial arts since he was a child. Like every other Christian mother, Tolu’s mother didn’t want him taking marital arts classes, but she couldn’t bear to see him cry everyday about it so she let him take the classes on the conditions that it’s just for exercise and self-defense. He would have to promise her he won’t get into fights in school or on the streets, and he sure should never get any ideas about becoming a professional or amateur fighter.
Tolu, thus grew into a modest innocent looking young man who looked and acted as if he couldn’t hurt a fly but really he actually had fists of fury. Only those who had taken the marital arts classes with Tolu knew that he was actually a lethal weapon.
One of the people that knew was Tolu’s former friend, Obu.
Tolu and Obu grew up together but they started drifting apart when Obu stopped attending church meetings and he started doing one shady thing after another on the streets of Port Harcourt.
Tolu and Obu still spoke – a little whenever they met, but Tolu knew that Obu was no longer a good person to have as a friend cause evil communication corrupts good manners, so Tolu was always either avoiding Obu or trying to end their conversations the very second their conversations begins.
Obu always bugged Tolu to participate in the Underground Street fight that held in the slums of Port Harcourt were the fights were deadly and the fighter’s pay was heavy. But Tolu always said No. He was even pissed to be even asked. He is a good Christian not some worldly street fighter. Besides, he made a promise to his Mum a long time ago and he was going to keep his promise.
One day, Tolu’s mother fell sick. Tolu took her to the hospital but they didn’t have to their name as much money as the hospital asked for, so the hospital refused to treat his mother.
Tolu tried taking his mother to every hospital possible in Port – Harcourt in the hopes he would find one that would charge something they could afford but he found none. And in the city of Port – Harcourt, if you don’t have the money for the medical treatment, then you should forget about receiveing the medical treatment.
Tolu brought the matter before the Pastor of the church he and his Mum attended. The Pastor encouraged Tolu to remain strong and also prayed with him. The Pastor also brought the matter before the church during their evening mid – week church meeting. He collected an offering specially to raise money for Tolu’s Mum’s medical fee but it wasn’t enough. The Pastor then said that he would keep collecting special offerings at every single church meeting until he gets enough money to pay for the medical treatment of Tolu’s Mum. But there wasn’t much hope for Tolu and his Mum in that because you know how folks feel about Pastor’s who ask for more offerings – they just think they are trying to make a fortune off the congregation. And I’m sure you also know how little folks drop into the offering basket, so as you can see there wasn’t much hope for Tolu and his Mum in that.
Tolu’s Mum health grew worse, and Tolu began going into a state of great depression.
Obu found out what Tolu was going through and he viewed it as an opportunity to get his former buddie to fight in underground street fight tournaments. Maybe, Tolu would even let go of all his Jesus stuff and they can be best friends again. So Obu went to visit Tolu and told him about how a single night’s fight would get him enough money to pay for the medical treatment of his Mum. But Tolu rejected the idea. He would not betray God or the promise he made his mother. He asked Obu to leave, that he would never be welcomed in his Mum’s house.
Tolu did every little thing he could that was legal to make money to make up what they already had for his Mum’s medical treatment but it just was never enough.
Later one night, Tolu went to his Pastor’s home. He was in tears. His Mum’s condition had gone really bad. He needed to do something quick for his Mum otherwise she would die. He needed to know if the Pastor had raised enough money. He needed a miracle from God – He needed something. But he left the Pastor’s house that night with nothing. The congregation had not given enogh to cover the payment for Tolu’s Mum’s medical treatment ever since the Pastor first announced it.
Tolu was mad at God and he left to look for Obu.
When Tolu found Obu, he apologized to him and begged him to hook him up, that he needed to fight that very night.
Obu had to press hard to pull all the right strings because it meant cancelling some matches that were already scheduled for that night to replace it with matches for Tolu to fight in.
Tolu fought that night showcasing true skill. He quickly became the crowd’s favorite. And after beating 3 opppnents he had 3 times the money he needed to pay for his Mum’s medical treatment but he needed to face every single opponent that challenged him that night for those were the rules.
Before the fifth battle began however, the big boss who ran the entire show told Tolu to take a dive. He was to lose on purpose so the Big Boss would make a lot of money from his bets.
However, Tolu didn’t take a dive. He fought and won every single battle that night. He left there with more than enough money to pay for his Mum’s medical treatment.
Tolu was weak from all the fighting but he was happy. All his problems were over. He had the money he needed.
When Tolu got home, he found that the front door was unlocked. That was strange, Tolu thought. He walked slowly into the dark living room with his instincts practically shouting that something was wrong. Very wrong.
Tolu heard the front door close quickly behind him with a force that made his heart jump. Someone put on the light and Tolu looked around the room to see he was surrounded by fierce looking men carrying really heavy guns.
The Big Boss from the underground Street fights sat on a sofa directly in front of Tolu. He had been waiting for Tolu. He was mad about all the money he lost when Tolu didn’t lose the fifth battle like he told him to.
The Big Boss ordered his men to start beating up Tolu.
Tolu was tried from all the fights, plus the Big Boss’ men were carrying guns – lots of big guns. So there wasn’t much Tolu could do to defend himself.
In his rage, the Big Boss ordered his men to bring Tolu’s Mum from her bedroom and then he shot and killed her right in front of Tolu. But before he killed her, Tolu could see the look in his Mum’s eyes. She knew what was happening. She knew the men were from the underground street fights. She knew her son must have been fighting in the underground street fights. She knew her son had betrayed her. She knew her son had broken the promise he made her.
That look Tolu saw in his mother’s eyes before she died pierced through his heart. It tore him apart from the inside.
The Big Boss was still angry about the money he lost. He was still hungry for revenge. He wanted to get back the money he lost but the money that Tolu had won that night in spite of how big it was wasn’t up to the money the Big Boss had lost. So to appease himself, the Big Boss took all the money Tolu had won and shot Tolu to death.
The next day, very early in the morning, Tolu’s Pastor showed up at Tolu’s Mum’s house. He had taken some money from his own personal life savings to add to what the church gave so that he could have enough for Tolu’s Mum’s medical treatment, only to meet with the dead bodies of Tolu and his Mum.
If only Tolu could have waited on God a little longer and not, gone back on the promise he made his Mum, they would have both been alive.
The Pastor couldn’t sleep that night after Tolu visited him, so he made the personal sacrifice of pulling money out of his own personal life savings that his own family was to benefit from. God had impressed it on his heart to make that sacrifice. Now it won’t be possible because the person he wanted to help is dead.
It’s sad that the Pastor couldn’t say a prayer of faith to heal Tolu’s Mum from the very beginning but still, all would have turned out well if Tolu didn’t compromise under pressure at the last minute.
Q & A
1) Why did Obu want Tolu to fight?
2) Why wasn’t the church able to bring forth enough money to save Tolu’s Mum when they were asked to?
3) Why did Tolu later decide to fight?
4) Why do you think Tolu refused to take the drive?
5) Where do you think Obu was when Tolu got shot to death?
6) Why do you think there wasn’t a prayer of faith to heal the sick said by the Pastor that would have immediately healed Tolu’s Mum?
7) What do you think Tolu’s Mum died thinking about her son?
8) Where did the Pastor get the money from in the end?

PRAYER OF SALVATION:
If you’ve been touched by what you just read and you’ve never given your heart to Jesus before but now want to become a Christian, please say this prayer and mean it with all your heart.
“Oh Lord God, I come to you in the name of Jesus Christ. Your word says, ‘… whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved’ (Acts 2:21)
So now I ask Jesus to come into my heart to be the lord of my life. I receive eternal life into my spirit and according to Romans 10: 9, ‘That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shall be saved’ , Therefore I declare that I am saved; I am born – again; I am a child of God! I now have Christ dwelling in me, and greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world! (1 John 4:4). I now walk in the consciousness of my new life in Christ Jesus. Hallelujah!”
PRAYER FOR THE RETURNING BACK SLIDER (ONLY):
“Oh lord God, I ask for your mercy and forgiveness for turning my back on you. I come back to you today in total sincerity and like the parable of the prodigal son, I thank you for receiving me back with Joy and Gladness.
I confess that Jesus Christ is the lord of my life and God the father is my Daddy. Hallelujah!”
PRAYER TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT:
“Oh Father, I thank you now for making me born again. For making me your child.
I ask that you give me your Holy Spirit to live in me and with me. For your word says that you would freely give the Holy Spirit to all those who ask. I open my heart and receive, and I know by faith that you have given me your Holy Spirit. Thank you Father. In Jesus name. Amen.”
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE NOW A CHILD OF GOD. WELCOME TO THE FAMILY OF GOD.

The “FREE DAILY CHRISTIAN BEDTIME STORIES” was formerly known as “KING’S DAILY BEDTIME STORIES.” It was a series of daily bedtime stories all written by Alfred Benjamin King but now it is open to any writer who is interested in writing a bedtime story to add to the daily series. The writer would receive all the credit for the writing but would not receive any money for it as the writing itself would be distributed for free around the web. This story should have cost you the same price of a children’s storybook that you can get from a book shop, but I prefer you learn to save money. It is an important skill every child should learn. So put the money you would have used to buy this story into your piggee bank.
The “FREE DAILY CHRISTIAN BEDTIME STORIES” series is a great and the only place to get free bedtime stories every single day for your kids.
You can review them yourself before you give them to your kids to read. It’s always good to review what you kids let get into their hearts. Entertainment is a tool to build or destroy. Monitor the movies, the books, the music and other forms of entertainment your kids get in contact with.
