I was there
In the crowds that day
When they said you should be put away.
Pray? No, I knew not true prayer.
I was there
Standing at my home
Watching you groan
Under the weight of the cross.
I was starting to feel some loss,
But to help I didn’t dare.
I was there
Standing at your feet.
Hearing strangers weep.
I didn’t know why.
I didn’t even care to cry,
But I was there.
I was there.
I saw the nails go in deep.
I wished that you would go to sleep
But deep down I knew you didn’t dare.
I was there.
In a flash I was on the cross with you.
Wondering what to do.
Then you took my place,
And I saw your face
And for the first time I cared.
I was there
I finally said a true prayer.
I asked for forgiveness of all my sins
And that’s where my spiritual life did begin.
Because I was there.
