THE FEAR THAT GRIPPED THE KING
By Henry Jaegers
Then the king’s face grew pale, and his thoughts alarmed him and his hip joints went slack, and his knees began knocking together. (Daniel 5:6)
The king’s countenance was suddenly changed from being joyful with intoxication to being fearful over seeing the hand writing on the wall. What he saw troubled him because he was no longer in control over his understanding of the message. .We are told that “the kings face grew pale, his thoughts alarmed him, his hip joints went slack, and his knees began knocking together.” Here we have a vivid picture of one terrorized by the awesome power of the living God.
It is a horrible experience for anyone to have. Scripture declares “it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Hebrews 10:31).Imagine some of the most terrifying experiences you may have had, and how it affected you both physically and emotionally. You will have some idea of what Belshazzar was going through. Belshazzar was encountering the part of God that we wish no one else had to experience.
There is another side of God which we desire all to know: His love and goodness. God does not will for any to perish neither did God send His son to condemn the world. However, when we defy the love and longsuffering of God there remains for us to face the consequences of rejecting His love and that is to face His wrath. The choice is ours to make. Praise the Lord when our encounters with God are positive. Pity the man whose only experience with God is one of fear. The Christian seeks to be in the presence of God. The unbeliever fears His presence. What will be your choice?
Another great job! The effects of not having a proper fear of God in our lives are seen in and out of the church. God will punish those who do not return His love, by accepting the sacrificial death of His beloved Son. Not only a good reminder, but true and should make one think about the definition of Grace. If the fingers of God evoked a reaction like that - consider the verses that speak of the Hand of God.
What he saw troubled him because he was no longer in control over his understanding of the message.
I did not understand this line.
