The Bible clearly speaks against living together before marriage, but some Christians are doing it anyway. Christian teaching has become very lax in this area. It has become too much of a norm in our society. A recent poll revealed that 50% of people see nothing wrong with it! That still does not make it right, and even among non-Christians, living together before marriage is not always taken well. Many people assume, rightly or wrongly, that if you are living with someone of the opposite sex who is not a member of your family, that you may also be having sex. Enough said. Now what does the Bible say in this regard?
Hebrews 13:4 admonishes us to "Let marriage be held in honor, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for fornicators and adulterers God will judge."
The dictionary defines fornication as voluntary sexual intercourse between two unmarried people. Scripture also tells us to live "beyond reproach" and to be a "light to the world." (Phil. 2:15) This means to live in such a way that people have a difficult time finding fault with what you do.
If you are living with another person before marriage, you either need to get married or find a different place to live. I know I am not being nice here. I do not intend to be. Truth is truth. Let's set an example of sexual morality regardless of what the polls or society tell us.
