Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday May 24, 2011
Having spent the vast bulk of my life around people of faith, I cannot imagine any progress without an active faith. To simplify, without faith, farmers wouldn't plant corn.
To say that faith must be placed correctly is a biblical principle. To have faith in pancakes would be of little value. True faith is focused on time proven scripture and thus we adhere to the admonition of Christ, "Have faith in God." Mark 11:22
Against this faith comes an army of faithless men and women engaged in a pact to destroy faith and ultimately any who have faith. Our society, even our civilization is on a course to find a way to destroy faith. And I have to say, destroy the faithful.
Dr. Richard Dawkins, atheist of note wrote:
"Faith is one of the world's great evils. It is capable of driving people to such dangerous folly, it seems to me to qualify as a kind of mental illness."
Another of this ilk, Dr. Steven Weinberg stated:
"If scientists can destroy the influence of religion on young people, then I think it may be the most important contribution we can make."
Against this onslaught we people of faith, must have faith, faith in God who has in the past enabled our faithful forefathers to overcome their world. This message from a man of world shaking, world changing faith should encourage us to a high standard of faith and the eternal vigilance that faith and liberty demand. Note Martin Luther on what has proved to be the battleground for the minds of the young concerning faith:
"I am afraid that schools will prove to be the great gates of Hell unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them in the hearts of youth. I advise no one to place his child where the Scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution in which men are not increasingly occupied with the Word of God must become corrupt."
Through observing the highs and lows of my own life and that of others I have noted over long years that the ebb and flow of faith in a person's life is closely tied to the continuous or lack of staying in the Scriptures in such a way that leads to a deeper love and faith rather than that mere search for knowledge alone that tends to "puff up" the reader. Pastors especially must study toward personal growth rather than to impress the group.
Faith is used 234 times, mostly in the New Testament. Here's one: Romans 5:1
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
