The late nineteenth century witnessed a revival of spiritualism that subsequently ushered in the commercialization of a particular tool used by those who were self-proclaimed “spiritualists”. This occult tool was originally referred to as a “talking board” and it was used by “mediums” to make contact with the dead or the unknown spiritual realm. Eventually, Parker Brothers began mass producing a talking board called a Ouija board, which became the most well-known of its kind, and it is still sold today. Opinions differ as to what is truly behind these “talking boards”; but many people confess that something supernatural exists with the use of these boards through their personal experiences. Having had my own disturbing history with these “talking boards”, I am thoroughly convinced that they are in fact a portal to the spiritual realm. However, where believers differ in opinion is whether the spirits contacted through these boards are benign and essentially safe or malevolent and seriously dangerous.
Individuals, who call themselves “mediums”, claim to possess a unique ability to make contact with the spirits of dead people, thus they become the middle-man between humans and the spiritual realm in order that the two may communicate and interact. Most mediums will make use of various “occult” paraphernalia to assist them in making contact with these spirits and “talking boards” have commonly been used for this purpose. The occult is a subject matter far too broad to cover in this essay, but collectively it encompasses many different forms of spiritualism tied to, but not limited to, such religions or beliefs as Wicca, Satanism, the New Age Movement, and Haitian Voodou. The occult also includes various practices such as astrology, reading Tarot cards, holding séances, and using Ouija boards. Both professional mediums and experimental dabblers in the occult have found success in conjuring up some obscure spiritual activity through the use of these boards, but their experiences often start to become unsettling at some point with regular use.
For some people, their first experience using these boards quickly becomes their last due to frightful events that occur while they were using the board. I discovered a legion of testimonies online where people are reciting their horrific and terrifying experiences with “talking boards” and these considerably outweigh the number of positive testimonies. I believe that those who continue to have pleasant experiences using a “talking board” are still being enticed into continuing their use and faith in these boards until the spirits choose to reveal their true nature. Once they have unveiled their true intentions, it is often too late for these deceived individuals to escape the consequences of their activities, especially the spiritual harm they have brought upon themselves. My experience resembled this pattern and it was not until after I became hooked on using the board regularly that the sessions became increasingly malign and scary.
A “talking board” uses a “planchette”, or message indicator, on which the users place their fingertips in hopes that it will glide across the board pointing to letters and numbers that are written on the board in order to spell words and respond to the user’s questions. Some of the modern “talking boards” that are being marketed under different titles, but with the same concept as the original Ouija board, contain other choices such as zodiac signs. The movement of the planchette is said to be generated by the spiritual entities that the users conjure up through attempting to communicate with them by asking questions aloud. Sometimes a self-proclaimed “medium” leads the session, but often times there is no “medium” present and all the users participate in communicating aloud with the spirits.
Some individuals will use the board alone, but often this is after they have progressed into regular use of the board and it is no longer just a “game” for them. This person has come to a point where they have actually developed a dependence on consulting these “talking boards” with their life issues. The danger for this person is greatly heightened by this point because they have fully embraced these spirits who have now been granted direct access to them voluntarily. It may be thought of as a form of mental and emotional intimacy with these spirits who are actively deceiving the person since it is harm upon them that these spirits truly intend to inflict. The severity of the consequences have been seen countless times in the lives of those who get sucked into the lies they listen to while using these “talking boards”.
I feel certain that the spiritual entities that one taps into through the use of “talking boards” come only from the spiritual realm that is the hotbed of Satan’s evil. As a Christian, admittedly being unable to separate myself from my faith on this particular matter, I understand that there exists a spiritual realm where Satan reigns and his demons carry out his ill-will against mankind. People are constantly attesting to the fear, danger, and manifested harm that is elicited from the use of these boards, thus my stance seems overwhelmingly supported by both Christians and non-Christians. The latter may not recognize the diabolical force within these spirits as the Christian knows that it is coming from the framework of Satan’s historical intention to turn humans away from their Creator. However, they can at least recognize that what they come to experience through using these boards is often not harmless, but quite real in its evil and maliciousness.
In my early twenties, I regularly used a “talking board”, named The Psychic Circle, which was fun and exciting in the beginning. Eventually, however, reality hit me and mine became filled with self-destruction, mental torture, and nearly brought me to my own death. It took quite a few years and enduring some horrifying experiences until I finally realized what I had opened myself up to through my previous activities. I couldn’t see this type of darkness within occult activities for what it truly was until I came to my faith in Jesus Christ. Without knowing my Lord, I think I would still remain bewildered at the unseen forces demonstrated through the use of Ouija boards and other “talking boards”. My Christian faith gives me complete and logical answers to the what, when, where, how, and why questions that continue to swirl around the mysterious Ouija board.
The Ouija board is a well-known hallmark of the occult. Using a Ouija board is clearly accepted by occult practitioners, although you will find some who are willing to admit to the dangers that lie within its use. It will undoubtedly continue to pique the interest of those who are still seeking answers and understanding within their lives. Some people must learn for themselves rather than listen to those who have come before them and personally know the results of playing with a dangerously unrestrained fire like the Ouija board.
