Proverbs 24:27
(excerpt from Morning Meditations by Martin Wiles)
Proverbs 24:27 Develop your business first before building your house. (NLT)
My wife and I had a major decision to make. We were both working for a local County; she in the assessor’s office and me in the treasurer’s. Gas prices were skyrocketing and we lived 35 miles away. So we decided to investigate purchasing a house halfway between our parents which would also cut our driving distance in half.
Purchasing a home can be a long and aggravating process. Ours was no different. Things went well until the closing. Then the roadblocks began to multiply. As I was sitting at my desk, my wife called to tell of another snafu. It was as if a light suddenly came on. Actually God spoke to my spirit and said; “Pay attention to my stop signs.”
Buying the house was our idea and not something we had prayed over. Not that purchasing a home was wrong; it simply wasn’t in God’s plan or timing for us. We immediately stopped the process and watched with amazement as other doors of ministry opened-opportunities we had been praying about.
Timing is everything as Solomon warns. Investing in a house while trying to simultaneously grow your business is dangerous. Both could be lost. A farmer who builds a house in the spring and neglects his fields will also miss the resulting produce and monetary gain for an entire year. Hard work is not a guarantee of success, especially if the timing is wrong.
Timing is essential in our personal walk with Christ and in church life. A church struggling to meet their budget should consider whether borrowing money for a new construction project is a step of faith or foolishness. If I’m holding so many positions at church that I cannot adequately fulfill my obligations, I should ponder whether God wants me to say yes when approached by the committee about teaching a class.
There are many good things we can do for God, but selecting the things in his plan is always apropos. Success comes from doing things God’s way, not mine. And in his time frame.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, when the opportunities come, help me consider the timing as well as Your plan for me.
