Have you ever met an Angel? Not one of the pathetic things that are sometimes paraded in front of our eyes to try to convince us that they have no real power, but a real bona fida being that makes an impact long after they've left the scene!
First of all, yes they do exist. But they are sometimes unlike anything we expect them to be. They are always on the side of the good guys and they have only one role, FIGHTING!
Yes, that's right, they have only one role and it's to look after those whom God has sent them to look after and to fight his Battles!
I know I'm making some pretty broad statements there, as we often think of those little baby like figures that Micheaelangelo painted on the walls of the Sistine chapel. Those figures bore no resemblance to what they really look like (thought they do give a good artist room for imagination).
I've met a couple of Angels in my time, I didn't know they were that until they'd moved on, but they were there and they did their job well. At least two of the times they stopped me from getting shot by simply being there and looking really mean.
Let me explain. It was a few years ago and I was working in a pretty dangerous part of the world, we used to call this part 'The Wild East' because it was a part where the rule of Law was long gone and the real law was the Law of the gun!
I was taking a generator from one city to a neighboring city about two hundred miles away. I'd checked everything out and we set off early one morning, we knew the trip would take at least eight if not ten hours, but we had everything under control, or so I thought!
About half way through the trip and at least twenty miles from the nearest village we got a flat Tyre. It was then that I worked out that the wheel nuts for the trailer which the generator was on (it was the trailer that had the flat, and the generator was bolted to it!) were a different size to the nuts on the Land-cruiser, I had a wheel-brace to fit the vehicle's nuts, but not the trailer. We had a choice, drive on and shred the wheel within 5 miles (and consequently totally wreck the axle as well) or try and get things fixed.
While we were working out what to do, it was getting dark (did I mention it was winter with heavy snows expected and we were in a mountain pass!) a vehicle pulled up and out got four of the heaviest armed locals I'd ever seen.
You need to understand that this was a place where the AK 47 was regarded as male jewelry, you just didn't leave home without one, unless you were a westerner working for a Christian organization that is!
Incidentally in case you're wondering where this place is, well in 1991 there was a big war there but the local dictator was left in power (heaven alone knows why!) until 2002 when the West decided to finally finish the job they'd begun and at the time there was a bounty on our heads of $25,000 US from the local dictator (no prizes for guessing his name!) and it was only to be paid for dead Westerners not live ones!
These four were not the kind of men who wore the AK to look cool, they really knew what it and they could do, I was scared.
As soon as they saw the situation they sent the driver ahead and the four of them took up positions all around us. I asked the leader what they were doing and they said simply that they's weren't leaving us as it was too dangerous for us to be on that road at that time!
I don't to this day know where they found a tractor, a wheel-brace and equipment to not only change my tyre but to fix the flat properly, but within half an hour the driver was back with a tractor and all the equipment needed along with a local farmer who knew how to do the work!
Within the hour we were on the move and I never saw those men again, but then again, I didn't need to see them again! They'd done their job!
Do you believe in them? I do! In the Bible they appear lots of times and most of the times they appear they are either fighting for God's people (2 Chronicles chapter 32 verses 20-23) bringing messages to his people (Luke chapter 1) protecting God's property (Genesis chapter 3 verse 24) or ministering to those who need it (Luke chapter 22 verse 43) and they are never the weak ineffective creatures we had portrayed to us.
Don't get me wrong, you should never worship an Angel, Lucifer was one and he made the mistake of wanting to be worshiped in the place of God and look what happened to him! He was thrown out of Heaven by the Archangel Micheal on God's command (Revelation chapter 12 verses 7-13) Only God is to be worshiped! But they're there to do what he needs them to and we can and do come across them. Just look out for them as they'll keep you on the path that God wants you on.
As I said, I've come across them a few times in my life and the truth is you probably have to, you just need to sit and think about those times and then spend a few minutes thanking God that he did send you an Angel to keep you safe and guide you!
