In this short article I would like to share some advice that I have learnt from studying the topic, I hope that this advice will clear some questions or queries you may have in regards to fasting.
Firstly we will start by having a look what fasting means in the dictionary. Noun: ďan abstinence from food, or a limiting of one's food, especially when voluntary and as a religious observance; fasting.Ē
So normal fasting would be going without food, but still having liquids. There are of course other fasts in which you restrain yourself from water as well, but these are a personal choice.
I know cases where individuals fasted from other things like their computers and so on, things like this need to be done between you and God, He will guide you into the right type of fast best suited for you.
So now that we know what fasting is, do you think all Christians need to fast? Well if we read the Bible and have a look at the Israelites under the old covenant, they were required by God to fast at certain times throughout the year. Then there are also examples of other Godly people who fasted, people like Elijah, Moses and Charles Wesley used to fast twice a week. Oh and letís not forget Jesus!
Now, you may think of fasting as a burden or something too hard for you to achieve. So I want to help change your mind on that and tell you that it is a lot easier than you think it is. You need to enter your fast with the right frame of mind; you need to approach your fast with the right motivation. Remind yourself that this is Godís will on your life. Remind yourself that you CAN successfully do it until the end. We shouldnít need God to send us a special invitation to fast because He already has throughout the Bible.
So how do we fast?
Matthew 6:17, 18 tell us that when we fast we should not let people know. In other words donít show off and brag about your fast. Donít put on a sad face that will make it obvious. These sort of actions will be of pride and pride is what got satan kicked out of heavenÖ now you wouldnít want a fast that is led by the devil, would you?
When you fast, act normal, live the way you usually do because the Father (God) who sees your heart and intentions and can see what sort of fast youíre doing, He will reward you for what you are doing.
Letís not forget that we also need faith. Have faith in God. Hebrews 11:6a says that ďwithout faith, it is impossible to please God!Ē seek God fully, knowing that He exists and loves you. There is no point fasting if you donít believe in God (keeping in mind that faith and deeds go hand in hand as the previous word for the week states.)
These where just some basic guidelines to fasting. Some people have been taught otherwise and know different then the true Biblical ways. I really do hope and pray that this article has blessed you and provoked you to continue or even start fasting.
Remembering that Jesus said certain demons will only leave through prayer and fasting, which means fasting has huge power. I will leave you to it hoping that you will continue to seek Godís guidance and advice in this topic.
