Towards the moonlight we go,
How it glimmers and shines this night!
Let our steps be light and swift,
So comes the day on our heels
Wrap the bread, tie the stones!
Leave the heavy to burn and totter,
We've no time to cut their ropes,
The wine and cheese, to all depart!
Quickly, do you not hear the iron?
Spears and staves and crooked swords,
Shields of lions and foul death,
O how the flowers are trampled!
I miss the flute! I miss the pillow!
Yet we all have lost such things,
Burden your hearts with pain tonight,
For we make to the fields of Tol'nidel.
Even there shall we find no rest,
For thorns and beetle wander thus.
Put out the torches, do we fright so soon?
At least be of men, courageous fools!
Yes, fight the drake with bar stools,
The dragon with candlesticks!
Make it a journey all might not sing,
Lest for us, we at least made the effort.
We all see the gold that glitters,
A mound vast, to ogres' shoulder tall!
Quit not, tho' our boots may be moldy,
And our scars too fresh to touch.
We've but days to go, to run, to hide,
But will we do such for nothing?
But of course not never! No never I say!
For a castle shall we call 'My 'Ome!'
There, the fields do I see with barren eye!
I have seen the last such sights to see!
Men! Men! Clear the woods and make camp,
Clean the treasures, careful with them pearls I say!
Beer and sunshine friends, soak it in!
Prepare the fire, salt the feet and snout,
Shall it be bacon, sausage and stale loaf?
Linger quietly, but sing a merry song.
We have no homeland for our feet,
No maiden of youthful glow to hold
But friends! O how the chains have fallen far,
And the trees and the birds do dance.
Can you feel it? It's in the breeze around.
Could it be, friends? Could it be freedom?
Yes! Let us wander with hope alone,
And return no more to lives ashamed.
