Short Stories
I slipped the thin screen out of its sheath. I touched different settings until it came to the simulator. It was finally real. As tangibly real as my new wool skirt and silk blouse. Gone were the days of the university. I was finally sitting at a national geo-engineering conference with a special emphasis on global warming. I had no wish to join the steady hum of socializing around me. I was here to solve the environment’s problems.
A wafer-thin briefcase landed in my peripheral view. I looked up. A man perhaps in his forties had staked claim of the chair right next to me. I thought I was going to have this table to myself, I thought. I had especially picked this one --- secluded in a back corner.
“Hi,” he smiled, oblivious of my eyes that plainly said, I’d rather sit by myself.
“Where are you from?” he asked, throwing his suit jacket on the back of the chair. He tousled a head of tawny red that gel could not tame.
“Virginia,” I said, warming to politeness, “And yourself?”
“Oregon. Just arrived.” He sat down in the chair and turned to me with friendly interest. “Have you been before?”
I couldn’t help smiling. “Oh, no. I would not have received an invitation if my uncle had not been on the panel.” I attempted to be interested in his affairs also. “How did you become...”
“Good morning...good morning,” the noise in the large conference room fell. Someone was introducing the program schedule and main speakers. A man stepped forward onto the platform.
Mr. Kirkengard was a slightly built man with dark receding hair and a narrow face. “Good morning,” he said pleasantly, “Our topic of discussion today will be the development of releasing a-alumina particles in the atmosphere and how it relates to the global warming issue.” A-alumina particles? My mind raced back to my biology labs. Aluminum......the same substance that poisoned the soils in my lab and slowly withered each plant? I thought we were trying to save the environment.
My neighbor leaned forward confidentially. “NATO has already expanded its contract with a company I supervise to begin testing on more populated areas of the midwest.”
Mr. Kirkengard went on to describe the different extreme possibilities in global warming that would call for the spraying of particles. He concluded, “Although stratospheric ozone depletion has not yet been tested, it should be considered in the future due to aluminum’s volumetric capabilities compared to those of other possible substances...” The session was ended. My eyes met those of my neighbor’s.
“Never been tested he said?” A tingle went down my spine. What group had I entered where their spokespersons said one thing and their members another. A crowd of reporters had begun to circle Mr. Kirkengard.
I looked at the stranger with new eyes. “How long have you been involved in testing stratospheric geo-engineering, sir?”
“About 18 years,” he said simply.
“Innocent girl,” he said softly with pity, “you have yet to learn that disastrous issues appear after their solutions have been found.” I stared into the eyes of a fellow murderer.
“The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
