If only there were Neverland
And Peter Pan
And childhood bands
You’d never grow to woman or man …
If only there were Neverland.
Where youthful dreams would ever reign
And carefree joy would laugh at pain
With every hardship bound and chained
If Neverland were a real place.
That nonexistent job you need
That hum-drum day with kids to feed
That world consumed with hate and greed
In Neverland you’d pay no heed.
You’d never have a boring day
Life’s only goal would be to play
Reality would soon be swayed
In Neverland you’d have your way.
Pirate ships would float right by
And you would fly
Through sapphire sky
With Neverland beneath your eyes.
This heartless world filled with despair
Where no one really seems to care
And “grown-up” life is one big dare
Will hiss that Neverland is “just not there.”
With that, I say, I must agree
For no one’s ever shown to me
A place to which someone can flee
Adult responsibility.
What would we do if it were real?
When Satan’s jaws encase our heel
Would we learn to turn and kneel
And to our Savior bring appeal?
That boyish, girlish, childhood lore
Could carefree world prepare us for
A sacrifice we should adore
That God’s own Son would fight our wars.
If never once we had to face
An awful trial in this place
And haughty pride with faith replace
Would we shun the Christ’s embrace?
So in our world where Peter Pan
Must grow up too and be a man
I cannot doubt the Master’s plan
For not creating Neverland.
