THE HANDWRITING ON THE WALL
By Henry Jaegers
Suddenly the fingers of a man’s hand merged and began writing opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king s palace, and the king saw the back of the hand that did the writing. (Daniel 5:5)
We have heard the expression, “he saw the handwriting on the wall” and is interpreted as a warning to change direction. Contrary to the popular interpretation, the handwriting on the wall was not a warning but a statement to Belshazzar of determined judgment. Because of his defiance, there was neither opportunity nor desire for repentance. Nebuchadnezzar was given opportunity and he grasped it. Belshazzar was not given that choice. He had openly defied the God of Heaven and chose to be the enemy of God. As such, he will experience the consequences of defiance: Final judgment was just a matter of time. For Belshazzar it was at hand as the enemy was making their way toward the palace.
Here is a message for us concerning our great and compassionate God. He gives men time to think, understand and act. We see an example in the life of Pharaoh, God gave him time to change his mind but his determination to keep fighting against God caused his heart to harden and he experienced the consequences of rejection. It is never God’s fault when men continually reject His invitation while His mercy extends to them. Continued ignorance, hostility and defiance are the stages of unbelief that have eternal consequences,
Does the handwriting on the wall cause anxiety and fear for you? It is the opportunity to find freedom from guilt and peace with God. Turn to Christ and receive His love and forgiveness. Remember: Today is the day of salvation.
