Psalm 133:1, “It is good for brethren to dwell together in unity…”
The word, ‘harmony’ means---to exhibit accord (agreement) in feelings or action. A pleasing combination of elements in a whole, marked by HARMONY OF SOUND.
A PLEASING COMBINATION:
You know how it is when you hear a good musical band? How every note is perfect and in sync, blending together in a pleasing combination of sound? You enjoy it immensely. This is true for me because I’m a musician. It makes you feel good inside. Your whole ‘self’ is peaceful--spirit, soul and body. You may even find yourself tapping your toes in rhythm to the music. You may even feel a little smile tugging at your lips.
Take the same musical band and add someone to the group who THINKS they have all the musical genius (all spiritual knowledge) but in reality, this person is in deception. In believing the lie, the person acts on it and moves into your harmonious combination of sound. They can’t stay in rhythm with the beat (with Holy Spirit). He’s too loud (sounding brass) and keeps playing wrong sour notes. And because of the intrusion (over-bearing) of a person like this, what happens to the peace and joy you felt earlier? It just flew out the window. Toodle-loo!
Now, you’re no longer relaxed and at peace in your spirit and soul. Your whole body has become tensed up like a coil. Every wrong sour note this person sounds out grates across your natural and spiritual nerves like steel wool. You just feel ALL out of sorts. And instead of toe-tapping on the floor, you would now like to toe-tap on this person’s head.
The once beautiful and harmonious music you enjoyed has now become dis-harmony. God Himself, created all things to be in harmony. The sun and the moon work in harmony with each other. The sun shines in the day. The moon shines at night. All four seasons, spring, summer, fall and winter are in harmony together. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are in harmony. They are three distinct personalities, yet all work together in harmony in relation to mankind and the world.
So, guess who brought the ‘dis-’ into the mix? You got that right---satan. This disharmony you now feel took with it your joy, your peace, the smile on your face and the tap of happiness in your toes. It left you with a bad attitude, impatience and a desire to, no doubt, throw this person out on their ear. NOT a good exchange. But wait a minute, do we HAVE to exchange our peace, joy, smile and our tapping toes for bad attitudes and impatience because we encounter unfavorable situations and people who are not ideal? Not what we think they should be?
The answer is, no, we don’t unless we choose to. But we can just as easily choose to release the fruit of patience and a good attitude by the Spirit and keep on tapping our happy toes while wearing a smile.
Deut.30:19, God said in this scripture that (paraphrase), “He has set before us life and blessing, death and cursing, choose life so that you may live and your seed.” Not only that but Jesus gave us commandment to love one another, even as He has loved us
(John 15:12). We’re to love those who persecute us---those who aren’t perfect and who tend to get on our last nerve and cause disharmony. By staying in Father’s love, we can maintain our peace, our joy, our smile and give out of His love, grace and compassion to others.
If we walk in love, loving God first, then we can be in harmony (unity of the Spirit) with our brothers and sisters in Christ---loving them as we learn to love ourselves in the right way. By doing so, we will once again be able to hear that pleasing combination of harmonious sound. It is the SOUND of the Holy Spirit, whispering ever so gently, “Well done. You made the right choice.”
