ESCAPING FROM REALITY
By Henry Jaegers
Belshazzar the king held a great feast for a thousand of his nobles, and he was drinking wine in the presence of the thousand. (Daniel 5: 1)
What a party it must have been. No one anticipated what was about to happen. The enemy was encamped outside the city carefully planning the takeover. Every one was inside the palace and the only thing that mattered was the celebration of the moment. They trusted in the cities high towers and the gates that protected them from the enemy. This was not the time to take anything serious. There was free wine and fun ahead but at the same time the enemy was lurking outside the camp. The festivities caused them to ignore the present danger.
Drinking caused them to let down their defenses, thinking that the only thing important was the pleasure of the moment. Drugs, cause men to ignore the reality of the pain, and indulging in mental fantasies cause them to ignore any present danger. When we choose to ignore the lessons from the past, we may have to repeat them. Unfortunately, Belshazzar was not given that luxury. Without warning, the party turned into a horrible nightmare. It became a party that no one wanted to remember but later, one that no one could forget.
There is only one reality in life that matters and it is the truth of Godís word. It is urgent that we understand it and declare it to others, because many are trapped and enslaved in a world of ignorance. Some of this is due to misinformation and some is by choice, but Satan uses ignorance to keep men from the reality that matters. It is our responsibility to create understanding that will set them free.
