In our society today, many of us are seeking to find purpose in our lives. My personal journey started at work. I have found myself unfulfilled at work on more than one occasion in my lifetime. I have asked myself why am I doing this job or what am I doing. The answer was mainly because I needed the money, and it was a job that I could tolerate. That being said, I should also add that each job did bring me a certain amount of joy. Recently, I read a book by Richard Leider titled "The Power of Purpose." I would encourage everybody to read it if you haven't already. After reading the first few pages, I knew what my purpose in life is. My purpose is "to encourage other people to be the best they can be and make them feel special." That's when it dawned on me that I wanted to help people feel good about themselves. Such a quick response in discovering your purpose in life is not typical, I suppose. I had taken a class at my church about finding purpose and meaning in your life. I was already in the mindset.
Another question we have to ask ourselves is "what are my expectations at work or in my life." I realize more and more that my expectations at work were and are probably too high. That being said, how do I deal with that. For me it is going to be adding the life coaching skills to my life. This will give me the training and priviledge of coming along side people and helping them make positive life style changes. These changes can be in health (which is the area I currently work in the most), employment or spiritual.
As Richard Leider mentions in his book (The Power of Purpose) we should ask ourselves "if I could live my life over again, I would...."
One other thing I want to mention as we work together to discover the true purpose for our lives. I noticed in reading materials on this subject that many of the examples seem to be extraordinary people (they had money, fame or both) who gave much to make a tremendous contribution. What about the rest of us sort of "average" people? Instead of focusing on a huge contribution (like raising funds to feed the hungry somewhere) I want to focus on day-to-day issues. I want to realize how I can make a contribution to people I meet up with every day. This is how I want to make my contribution to the world, my little world.
As a fitness trainer, I realize how much our physical is connected to the emotional. How many people don't like the way their look. If they had better self-esteem, they would realize how important it is to take care of their body. How many people are tied into jobs and leave them feeling unfulfilled. One of my joys in life is to help people feel good about themselves and discover their true purpose and joy in life. I feel that our self-esteem is tied into all of the phsycial and psychological aspects. How is your life working for you? I think this is a very important question we each need to ask ourselves. So how do we find purpose and joy in life? What are some practical steps we can take. I can recommend two things. First take some time to think. Take some time to know yourself. Find some quiet time some how, some where. Second, learn about what really gets you excited. What gets you excited about getting up in the morning? After doing with these things, decide what steps you need to take to fulfill that plan. How are you doing to get there? Talk with friends, family or a life coach. Get a support group around you who will help you. If you take these steps, you will go a long way toward reaching your goals and having a more fulfilled life,
