Throughout the history of ancient Israel, God’s chosen people were constantly punished because many of their leaders did not do right in the sight of the Lord. However, King Hezekiah of Judah was different from most kings. He decided early in his kingship (715 B.C. to 686 B.C.) to follow the commandments of the Lord and to live a righteous life before God and his subjects. As a result of his dedication, God gave him wealth, fame, protection, and a long reign of twenty-nine years.
However, what did King Hezekiah do that showed God that his intentions were truly honorable toward Him? The answer to this question can be found in II Chronicles, Chapter 29-32. The first thing that Hezekiah did was to recognize that the Lord God Jehovah was the one and only true and living God. As a result, he reopened the doors of the house of the Lord and repaired them. He also had the priests and Levites sanctify themselves, sanctify the house of the Lord, and then remove all the filthiness out of the holy place. Then, he had the desire in his heart to make a covenant with the Lord in hopes that the Lord’s wrath would be turned away from Judah and Jerusalem.
The second thing that Hezekiah did was to require the rulers of the city to attend the house of the Lord. After the sacrifices were offered for the atonement of all the people of Israel, King Hezekiah and all that attended with him bowed and worshipped the Lord God Jehovah. As a result, Hezekiah and all the people were overjoyed because of what God had done for the people in such a short period of time. Therefore, God had put His stamp of approval on Hezekiah and the people of Israel as they once again confessed their sins and sought the Lord God that they had rebelled against for many years.
Then, the third thing that Hezekiah did, after he and the rulers of the city were revived spiritually by the Lord, was to send letters to all Israel to come to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem and participate in the Passover, a time to remember the death angel passing over those in Egypt that had blood over their doorpost during the time of the ten plagues. The king’s representatives also voiced the king’s commandment for the children of Israel to once again worship the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel (Jacob). In fact, he told them also that they should not be stiffnecked like their fathers and that they should serve the Lord God Jehovah so that He would remove His wrath toward them. Of course, fortunately, some people did go to Jerusalem to worship God in the sanctuary, but some people did not accept the words of the king’s representative.
Nevertheless, some people did assemble themselves in Jerusalem. While there, Hezekiah prayed that God would pardon them from all the sins that they had committed. Of course, because they returned to God, He pardoned them and healed them, too. As a result, there was more jubilation in Jerusalem since the time of Solomon. Therefore, after the priests prayed for and blessed the people of Jerusalem, their voice was heard by God and their prayer arose to God’s holy dwelling place, that is, heaven. Then, after the Passover celebration was over, the people who attended went throughout the cities of Judah and utterly destroyed all the symbols of idol worship. Ultimately, by removing the sin from the camp, it made it easier for the people of Judah to worship the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel (Jacob) without having to deal with the temptation of worshipping idols on a regular basis.
Finally, the last thing that Hezekiah did was to permit the Lord God Jehovah to fight his battles against the multitude of enemies that attempted to destroy Judah. When Sennacherib of ancient Assyria made threats to destroy Judah, Hezekiah and his war captains met with his subjects and spoke comforting words to them. According to II Chronicles 32: 7-8, Hezekiah said,
7Be strong and courageous be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:
8With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
However, despite the people of Judah feeling comforted after Hezekiah’s speech, king Sennacherib continued to attempt to terrify and put fear into the hearts of God’s people. In fact, according to II Chronicles 32: 11-17, the godless king of Assyria said,
11Doth not Hezekiah persuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
12Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?
13Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?
14Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
15Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
16And his servants spake yet more against the LORD God, and against his servant Hezekiah.
17He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.
But, even though this arrogant king had the military force to support his accusations, he did not realize that the God of Judah was already brewing a more powerful antidote to his terror tactics and threats from His throne in Heaven. As stated in II Chronicles 32: 21, “the LORD sent an angel who exterminated all the soldiers, officials, and commanders in the Assyrian king's camp. Humiliated, Sennacherib returned to his own country. When he went into the temple of his god, some of his own sons killed him with a sword.” Therefore, since Hezekiah lived a life of righteous in the eyes of God and worshipped Him with his whole heart, the Lord God Jehovah fought Hezekiah’s battles for him. Such was the life of Hezekiah!
Of course, now in postmodern America, there is even a more important question that needs to be answered. The question is: What must the President of the United States do now and in the future in order to get God to bless America once again? First, the President of the United States should proclaim from the Oval Office that Jesus Chris is God’s only begotten Son and that He alone should be worshipped. As a result, the President should not give any recognition to other false gods from false religions because God does not want to be second place to any other gods. This was evident when He gave Moses the Ten Commandments on Mt Sinai, which was to be the foundation for Hebrew law. As written in Exodus 20:3-5,
3Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.
Therefore, since American presidents normally make it a point to group all religions and their gods into one large pot, it is understandable that God would be less likely to bless America. The same thing happens in human relationships, too. When a girl finds out that her boy friend is two-timing her, she will be less likely to give her true affection to him. Of course, if this continues, this could create a great divide between them. God is no different!
Second, the President of the United States should personally lead the nation in solemn prayer to the Lord God Jehovah and follow the dictates of His Holy Word. Since almost 90 percent of Americans profess that they have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, the President should have most Americans supporting his efforts to get the Lord God Jehovah to answer a praying nation’s supplications requesting Him to bless them again. Of course, the President should also promote the return of prayer, Bible-reading, and the Ten Commandments back in public settings, especially if he truly wants God to answer his prayers. If it was good enough for America’s Founding Fathers when they prayed and read the Bible as part of their daily routine when they devised the greatest Constitution in the world for the greatest nation in the world, it should be good enough for the postmodern leaders of America who these days are normally viewed as crooked politicians rather than true statesmen.
Of course, postmodern skeptics would refute any claim that America’s Founding Fathers were religious. However, the religious life of George Washington, the first President of the United States, would be an excellent example to use in order to prove once and for all that prayer and Bible-reading was important to the writers of the U.S. Constitution. According to David Barton of WallBuilders,
George Washington was elected president unanimously. He was the only president to be elected unanimously and during his inauguration after he took the oath of office, he added “So help me God.” He requested that he be sworn in on the Bible and afterwards he leaned over and kissed the Bible indicating that his oath was not just to the people of the United States, but to God as well. He then offered a prayer for the nation. After the inauguration, Congress went into session and before they did anything they went to church where a sermon was preached and prayers were offered for the elected officials and for the nation.
Needless to say, based on George Washington’s religious activities during his inauguration and during the first session of the U.S. Congress, it is obvious that America’s Founding Fathers did have a remarkable history of prayer and Bible-reading as a part of their daily governmental routine. Then, as a result of America’s past religious history, the presidents of the postmodern period of America’s history must make prayer and Bible-reading the major two resources that they use to tackle the challenges that a dominant world power will encounter. Therefore, prayer and Bible-reading should be used every day to begin any and all governmental meetings. As a result, God would see just how sincere America’s presidents are in their request for God to bless America. Of course, prayerfully, a great religious awakening would begin in the Oval Office and spread throughout every government office in Washington, D.C. Just imagine the President of the United States, U.S. Representatives, U.S.Senators, and other elected and appointed leaders praising and worshipping God in a public setting.
Third, the President of the United States should destroy all idol and false god worship in the executive branch and then encourage the leaders of the Congress and the Supreme Court to do the same in their branches of government, since this is the reason that God does not bless America as He did many years ago. There are just too many people in high governmental positions that have refused to serve the one and only true and living God. Instead, they bow down to false gods of other non-Christian religions that do not recognize Jesus as the only method of salvation. As a result, the President should remove the prayer sites to false gods that exist in governmental buildings and replace it with prayer and worship of the Holy Trinity-God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Then, the President should use all media resources to call the whole nation, especially the majority Christian population, to praise and worship the Lord God of the Founding Fathers. Therefore, if the President, other postmodern leaders of America, and American citizens return to the God and moral beliefs of its Founding Fathers, America would make a swift turnaround from its current economic and social fiasco.
Finally, the President of the United States should make God the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the United States military. In so doing, America’s troops would be needed less and less to fight America’s military battles. Instead, God and His angels would represent the United States against foreign godless nations. In fact, there were several instances in the Old Testament where the Lord fought the battles for the Hebrews. In II Chronicles 20: 15, the Holy Scripture reads, “And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.” Also, in II Chronicles 20:17, it reads, “Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you.” Finally, in Exodus 14:13, it reads “Moses answered the people, Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.” Therefore, based on these scriptures, it is obvious that the Lord God Jehovah will fight the battles for any nation that prays and worships the Lord God Jehovah and His son Jesus Christ, that reads His Holy Word, and that keeps His commandments.
But, in order for this to happen to any nation that serves the true and living God, the leader of that nation must first possess the characteristics of a godly leader. In other words, where is America’s Hezekiah? Where is a leader who prays to the only true God, the Lord God Jehovah? Where is a leader who is saved through his or her faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ as the only atonement for the sins of all mankind? Where is a leader who does not deny America’s Judeo-Christian heritage? Where is a leader who is a staunch supporter of God’s nation Israel? Where is a leader who promotes America as a Christian nation? Where is a leader who supports the National Day of Prayer? Where is a leader who praises Christianity as the “religion of peace.” Where is a leader who does not promote sexual orientations that are contrary to the Holy Bible? Where is a leader who does not attempt to eliminate the unalienable rights of American citizens? Where is a leader who will say the pledge of allegiance with his or her right hand over his or her heart? Where is a leader who will not be ashamed to say “that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights” when quoting the Declaration of Independence? Where is a leader who puts the interest of American citizens above the interest of illegal immigrants? Where is a leader who is not ashamed to proudly and boldly say, “In God We Trust?” Ultimately, if you are that leader, another King Hezekiah, please go register now for the 2012 Presidential Election. Your country needs you desperately!
