There is a song that says, “He gave his life what more can He do?” But little do we realize what Jesus actually did for us. When Scripture says, “For God so loved the world,” by the word “so”, we should realize that Jesus, wishing to show to us the superabundance of his love, made Himself a sacrifice, bearing excessive grief and pain, exceedingly above and beyond the call of duty and the demands of justice. Any manner of quicker and less painful death would have equally satisfied justice, but He chose to be racked upon a tree of torture so that we would never doubt his love for us.
His cross of wood was not by chance but chosen.
His crown of thorns was not vital but extra.
His 39 stripes were not essential but excessive.
His hands and feet nailed were not accidental but intentional.
His side pierced was not necessary but voluntary.
The cruel mocking, the beard plucking, the spitting, the blindfolding,
And all else were not needed by justice but wanted by love.
Oh that we might see the extent to which Jesus went to prove his great love towards us!
“SO”
ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY!
