The Power of Prayer

Have you ever wondered why they’re so much evil in the world? Some would say, “Because of sin and the devil.” But I believe there could be another reason, and one that offers a solution.

This age-old question troubled many of God’s great men. When David felt the temptation to envy the wicked he was almost tripped up until he went into the sanctuary and resolved to rest his assurance upon the Goodness of God, “God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.” Ps 73:1 Job struggling against the very bitterest of evils cast his anchor of hope into the Omniscience of God. “Times are not hidden from the almighty.” Job 24:1 Habakkuk fixed his trust in the Holiness of God, “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity. Hab 1:13
Their faith, mighty as it was, gave them the strength to cope with evil but did nothing to solve it. Many times when evil flourished the heavens were silent. Would there ever be a remedy?

In the summer of 1976 an event occurred that opened my eyes. One Friday at midnight as I was driving home from a date in Springfield, Nebraska a drunken driver fell asleep and swerved off the road just seconds before reaching me. He proceeded down a hill before crashing into a concrete wall instantly meeting death. In my own drowsiness I continued driving awhile before shaking myself awake and returning to investigate. In pitch dark, without a flashlight it took 10 minutes to find the tracks. Then using a pack of matches I found the car on its side smashed up against a wall. The smell of gas alerted me to quickly blow out the match and summon the authorities to take over the investigation. Later as I drove home it was with a grateful sense that God had miraculously spared my life from an evil disaster but as of yet I did not know the reason. In two days I would discover a wonderful secret.

At the next Sunday evening service I shared my story with my friends. One by one they rejoiced. Then when I approached my friend Richard Davis, an airman at Offutt Air Force Base, he responded with a shout of joyous surprise. Excitedly he related how God had given him a dream that same Friday. It was a very vivid and violent dream. It was with sounds of screeching tires, cars crashing, screams, blood, death, then a body, “Whose body I asked?” “Yours,” he said. “Then what happened?” I asked. “At that point I awakened, got to my knees and offering up strong prayers in your behalf. When I finished praying I noted the time, it was at midnight!” Hallelujah! God answers prayer!

So why is there so much evil in the world? From what the Bible teaches and from my own experience, the answer is because there is so little prayer. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Listen Saint, prayer is the mightiest force in the Universe because it pleads the Promises of God. Every Holy Ghost inspired prayer in your mouth is as omnipotent as God Himself. This is the Holy Ghost praying through you! Ro 8:26 No matter how weak you may feel, no matter how sinful you may have been, don’t let the devil cheat you. Saint, - YOU HAVE POWER IN PRAYER! “You have power over Angels; they will fly at your will. You have power over fire, and water; you have power to make your voice heard beyond the stars; if you are praying ‘Thy will be done,’ then the ear of God shall listen and the hand of God shall yield to your will.” Charles Spurgeon
