“God created the heavens and the earth…God created humankind in his image; God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food’…God saw everything he had made, and indeed, it was very good.”(Genesis 1:1, 27, 29-31) God entrusted this green planet to the careful care of man. But in course of time he exploited it for his selfishness and it has caused suffocation of its green lungs. Deforestation has resulted in drought and global warming.

Consequences of deforestation -thirst of the earth

The green lungs of the blue earth is turning red due to deforestation and pollution. Consumerism and commercialism have forced man to misuse the wealth of the earth for his selfish motives. Water resources on the earth are being reduced and today the earth is more thirsty. Man who is supposed to love nature share the natural resources with prudence has caused nature cry out of ‘thirst’.

The cry of Jesus on the Cross

The cry of Jesus Christ before his death, “I am thirsty” (John 19:28) is also a cry for conservation of the ecosystem. It is a cry for using things of nature in charity. It is a cry of prudent care of humanity. It is cry for sharing and caring.

2011- International Year of Forests

The UN has designated the year 2011 as the International Year of Forests in order to promote conservation and sustainable growth of forests. This is a call to the whole humanity to take up the challenge of protecting the planet that has been entrusted to man.

Conservation of the ecosystem a Christian duty

God created us to be happy on this earth. But greed and selfishness of man have resulted in pollution and global warming. Christian charity expects every Christian to use natural resources reasonably without wasting and polluting. Nature is the music of God and we should not spoil its rhythm.

Let us pray God, “I will wait for You like the dry earth waits for the rain–eager to feel Your presence wash over my thirsty soul. Oh Lord make me conscious of the creation that Your love has provided us.”
