Have you ever lay awake all night fretting over all the evil things people have done to you? Ever think of finding someway to get even? Have you ever actually taken action to get even. Ever read God's statement "vengeance is mine" (getting even)?
Such thinking and feeling is more destructive to people, families, churches and even nations than all the afflictions we worry about put together. Bitterness and the personal torment and maladies by the number from the root or bitterness cannot be measured.
Have you ever thought, "I wonder if there is a good antidote for these thoughts and feelings? I really would like to get over it and go on with life." Well, do I have news for you. First off learn the truth about getting even from Godís Word, accept what He says about things, leave it in His hand to deal with and move on to a more biblical outlook, thinking and feeling.
My longtime friend and very successful pastor, speaker and author, Dr. Phil Stringer said something on FaceBook that caught my attention and I have attempted to work out a formula to easily implement his wisdom.
"If you're going to get even, get even with someone who did you a favor."
Imagine being unable to sleep and while you're experiencing this, think, "What good thing can I do for Dr. Phil Stringer? He has done so many favors for me, how can I ever repay him? I wonder if he needs anything, maybe even just a call or note, or even a nice love offering?"
Were you to actually do this, the channel would not be overloaded, but God would in all likelihood hear your prayer, and think to Himself, "I have never heard such a prayer for Phil." (God calls him by his preferred nick name and Dr. Stringer is learning to live with this).
Thinking and acting like this to Phil; (Dr. Stringer for mortals) is in harmony with Philippians 4:8:
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
It makes sense to engage in Paul's instruction of healthy thinking and feeling. Paul also commented on the wisdom of leaving getting even to God in Romans 12:19:
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
I am blessed by Phil's idea on "Getting Even." I hope you will be too.
