TAKING IDOLATRY TO A NEW LEVEL

Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of Gold, the height of which was sixty cubits (Approximately 86 feet) and its width was six cubits;(approximately 18 feet) he set up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. (Daniel 3:1)
Nebuchadnezzar is like a lot of people, who, after coming through a crisis, forget about the God who saved them. There is something that the king did remember; that God described him as the head of gold. He took it a step further and created an image of gold (some say that it resembled himself), and instead of the head of Gold he made a whole body of Gold. The head of Gold in Godís economy was the beginning of deterioration not the reason for self exaltation.
Idolatry always begins in the mind by thinking thoughts of God that are unworthy of Him. For some reason, Nebuchadnezzar missed the message and forgot who the true God is. He is about to add a new phase to his understanding. His inflated ego sets himself up as God, demanding all the people to fall down and worship at the sound of the trumpet. There is an analogy here that reveals when human government comes in to control the tendency is toward controlling the people rather than serving them.. What Nebuchadnezzar saw as an elevation, God sees it as a step backward.
Nebuchadnezzar was still in Godís hand, although it appears that he is out of control. We donít always understand the things that God allows, but we can confidently rest in the fact that His ways are perfect, and if we are patient we will discover this. The good news is that the chapter does not end here with the Kings idolatry.
