Once in a Blue Moon

Remember that old song called “Blue Moon”? The chorus lines say:
Blue moon,
Now I'm no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart,
Without a love of my own

Originally this classic was written by Rodgers and Hart in 1934, and has been remade by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, and the Miracles.

The moon has always intrigued us. It’s there every night; that same “face” looking down upon each of us since the beginning of time. The moon can take on a romantic eminence; it can take on a spooky element; it can take on a scientific aspect. People thousands of miles away see that same floating rock held up by nothing. At different times, it has different phases - full, half, crescent, new, and blue. The blue moon is the second full moon in a single calendar month. The age old saying of “Once in a blue moon” reflects its rarity and is synonymous with “not very often.”

The Bible talks often about the moon and what it represents including a sign of prosperity (Deut. 33:14), a sign for good battle (Jos. 10:12), a symbol of the creative glory God has placed in man (Ps. 8:3), a symbol of forever (Ps. 72:7; 89:37), a marker of the seasons (Ps. 104:19); and a beauty of a woman (Song of Songs 6:10). The ancient Hebrews marked the beginning of each month according to the new moon with a celebration and sacrifice to the Lord (Ps. 81:3,4).

The moon has no light of its own. All its glory comes from the sun. There is an old spiritual lesson in this. None of us have light in and of ourselves. It all comes from the true Sun/Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Full Moon Christians reflect that perfect light emanating from the Son of the Living God. In contrast, Blue Moon Christians are “not very often” Christians and rarely reflect His light.

Let’s not be Once in a Blue Moon Christians; let’s always be Full Moon Christians reflecting the light of Jesus to the dark, dying world around us.
Let’s make our song:
Full moon,
Now I'm no longer alone
I have a dream in my heart,
A love of my own
Jesus Christ, my Lord.
