Attributes of a Virtuous Woman: Proverbs 31:10-31 ($221)
The most quoted scriptural question is “Who can find a virtuous woman”, but I am posing the question what are the qualities of a virtuous woman? Attempting to answer the question the writer will reflect on the qualities found in her mother, where she displayed reverence for God first, her husband and then her family. Mother set forth all the attributes found in our scripture verses while teaching her young daughters this is the way a Christian wife and mother conducts herself. Mother’s conduct as a wife and mother aligned with our scripture verses, as she busied herself with making sure her family was cared for in every capacity. She utilized God given resources and abilities to help support her family while lending a hand to those in need in her community.
Lacking the biblical knowledge of her teachings and why she conducted herself the way in which she did during my youth caused me to inquire of the scripture; where research led the writer to the above scripture only to find mother was living a Christian life before her daughters thus providing them with a profound message of how to be a wife and mother.
Now that the writer has given a personal overview of a virtuous woman; the writer will state that she has witnessed the same attributes displayed in other Christian mothers and wives throughout her life.
Allow the writer to parallel virtuous women she has known and our scripture verses; first a virtuous woman is more valuable than rubies, in other words she is priceless. Second, she has the love, trust and respect of her husband because she has submitted herself to him in love, respect, assistance, purity, submissiveness, a quiet and gentle spirit, she is a good mother, and homemaker. She does all these things because they are seen as obedience to Jesus, “as unto the Lord” (Ephesians 5:22). Third, a virtuous woman has committed herself to her husband for a lifetime as stated in her vowels “until death do us part,” in other words a virtuous woman does not marry to get divorced. Fourth, the scripture states that “she seeketh wool and flax”, but let’s just say she makes sure her family has the proper clothing for all seasons; it matters not the season. More over, a virtuous woman teaches her daughter (young) that some fashions are inappropriate for Christian virtues (dress). Fifth, the author liken her to “merchant’s ships” who bring food for consumption, this means a virtuous woman assures that her family has an ample supply of food and she rises early to prepare balanced meals for her family. Additionally, a virtuous woman makes sure she buys quality food for her family as only the best will do. Why does she require the best for her family? A virtuous woman fashions her life and love after God and His love for all humanity; He gave the best that He had, therefore, a virtuous woman gives her best in all that she does for her family. A virtuous woman realizes she is the nucleus of her family and their well being is her first concern. This brings the writer to a question regarding her strength and endurance without tiring, how does she toil morning till night?
How does a virtuous woman toil morning till night without tiring? A virtuous woman girds herself with the strength of God and His grace which provides the strength to continue daily until bedtime. At the close of her day, she rests peacefully knowing that she has given the best care to her family with the love of God. Another school of thought on a virtuous woman toiling is that she busies her hands to give no room for Satan and his demonic schemes. She busies herself with the poor of her community lending a helping hand to those in need; she does so with the love and compassion of Christ. Additionally, she is known throughout the community as a woman of grace, wisdom and one who speaks kindness to all. Also, her dress speaks for her as a woman of grace and character admired by all as she refrains from the day’s fads and fashions that are less desirable of Christian virtues. Furthermore, she realizes that her character dignifies the clothes she wears. Even her husband and children praise her and call her blessed. Why, her family realizes the jewel they have in a virtuous wife and mother. Finally, a virtuous woman realizes where her true beauty lies, which is not primarily in outer appearances, but true beauty begins in the heart and resonates outward. Therefore, the works and lifestyle of a virtuous woman speaks for her and is witnessed by family and friends alike.
In closing this discussion on virtuous women, it is designed to highlight and reflect on those attributes designed by God that all women should possess and what our young men should look for in a wife and mother of his child (ren). Moreover, all women possess the basic attributes of love and care for their family; therefore, she puts forth her best effort for her love ones. A virtuous woman is to be loved, respected and cherished by her husband.
Finally, a virtuous woman is a precious commodity.
