with Scriptural Examples from The Holy Bible
( Definitions were taken from Warriner's English Grammar and Composition: Complete Course, Harcourt, Brace, and World, New York, 1965 by Donald W. Lee, Peter M. Miller, and Orville Palmer. )
Compiled by Melineze Logan Hite
The 8 Parts of Speech are the noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, preposition, interjection, verb, and conjunction.
The noun is the name of a person, place, or thing. It can be proper or common.
A proper noun is capitalized and it is a specific noun. The common noun is not capitalized and it does not name a specific kind.
The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer: my God, my strength, in whom I will trust: my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. Psalm 18:2
( The nouns are numerous here. They are "Lord, rock, fortress, deliverer, God, strength, buckler, horn, salvation and tower". What are the two proper nouns named here? Correct. They are "Lord" and "God". The rest are common nouns.)
The pronoun takes the place of a noun.
Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the Lord. Haggai 1:8
( The pronouns are "it", "I", and another "I". Can you name the understood subject used here? Correct. "You" is the understood subject to whom the Lord is speaking. "It" takes the place of "house". What about "I"? Correct. "I" takes the place of "Lord".
The adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. It tells how many, how much, which one, and what kind.
"I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon." Song of Solomon 1:5
What are the two adjectives used here to describe Solomon's great love?
Yes, she was "black" and "comely".
The adverb usually ends in -ly, and it modifies the verb, the adjective, or another adverb. It tells how, when, where, and to what extent.
"I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry." Psalms 40:1
The adverb used in this sentence is the word, "patiently". How did I wait? Yes, patiently!
The preposition shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to some other word in the sentence.
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Genesis 1:1
The preposition that is used in this sentence is the word, "in". It shows relationship to the noun, "beginning". Some common prepositions are "in, from, to, down, under, around, with, of, after, upon, through, on, against, and near."
Can you name more? Great!
An interjection shows excitement or strong feeling and has no grammatical relation to other words in the sentence.
"Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord whom you seek, shall sudddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in : behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts." Malachi 3:1
What is the interjection which is used twice here in this scripture? Correct. "Behold"!
The verb shows action or state of being.
"For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem, to battle,; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city." Zechariah 14:2
The following are verbs: will gather, shall be taken, rifled, ravished, shall go, and shall be cut.
The conjunction joins words together.
"A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace." Ecclesiastes 3:8
The conjunction is the word "and". How many times is it used here? Correct. Twice.
