On this crisp, cold winter night, we’ve come to worship the greatest gift of all – Jesus Christ. Creator of the Universe, your son willingly gave up all the honor, glory and right to be worshiped, and to experience life as a human being. It is difficult to imagine a king being born in a stable yet Jesus Christ, King of kings and Lord of lords did exactly that for us. We confess, God, we don’t deserve his act of humility, nor the gift given to world, but we thank you for Jesus the Christ. We thank you for gift of eternal life offered to all through his sacrifice.
In the excitement of this holiday season, we confess we have not always remembered why we celebrate this season. Forgive us and now help us to focus our thoughts on Jesus, who is our Redeemer. As we share gifts with each other, may we also share, with joy and love, the true message of Christmas. Christ is love.
As we share in the candle lighting later this evening, remind us of the words of the gospel of John, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome.”
In the name of the Christ child, King of kings, we pray. Amen.
