A wretch he was, John did profess
By his own lips he said these words
And pinned them in a humble verse
A sea captain of the worse
His every breath an evil curse
One stormy night the wind arose
He fought that wheel with all his might
Cursing through each lightening strike
He thought that each breath he took
Would be his last upon this earth
The wind, the sky, the roaring waves
The elements of this world just shook.
When he thought that all was lost
He cried out to a Lord that he thought
He surely had forgot
His last hope, what would it cost?
HE cried “Lord have mercy upon us”
Instantly the wind did cease, the waves were calmed
Everything turned from wrong to right
Out there on the ocean that night
John came out of that storm a brand new man
He believed that the grace of God had spared his life
And delivered him from a life of shame
Now he has all the equipment to run this race
John Newton would never be the same!
I praise God for HIS Amazing Grace.
