The Bruised Reed
Isaiah 42:3
The reeds sway at the water’s edge,
A band of soldiers tall,
They gently sway on whispered wind,
I hear their rustling call.
A strong band, rooted firm and deep,
Clustered as one, on bank-side steep.
Towards the edge stands one alone,
No longer straight and tall,
But bent and blackened is his stem
And bruis-ed – will he fall?
Trodden down, and left for dead,
No more to lift his graceful head?
With tender hand the gardener comes
And lifts the battered reed,
He gently smoothes the crumbled stem
And straightens it indeed.
He places in support, and then
He waits for it to grow again.

I love the picture of the gardner so gently tending that bruised and bent reed.
