Recently we had come across news about a village panchayat imposing sanction on the use of mobile phones for unmarried women in Uttar Pradesh which made us rethink on the plight of women in our society and the liberty we talk about. It’s not that a khap panchayat has indulged in moral policing for the first time. We often come across incidents where panchayats decide rights and wrongs for women which are totally against one’s human rights. Aren’t there any guidelines for these panchayats so that issuing of fatwas like these could be stopped as such decisions are roadblocks in the development of our country. We hardly come across news of any action taken against these kinds of decisions by panchayats which enforces us to believe if law and order still persists in our country and if our constitution is being respected. These are unpalatable truths of our society and as an Indian we should be ashamed of such actions. We can understand that most of us feel handicapped because we can’t do anything to make sure that incidents like this don’t repeat because ideologies which are against equality are abhorrent . It is imperative now for our representatives sitting in Delhi to take some actions against these panchayats which are disrespecting our constitution and bringing shame to our country.
