“As the deer panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul
after thee, O God”. Psalms 42:1
How often have we found ourselves busy with the cares of life, running to
and fro hardly stopping to take a breath? I would venture to say quite often.
Oh, when we rise each morning we have the best intentions to set time
aside for our heavenly Father but somehow it seems to get lost and we
find ourselves hoisted into the calamities of life.
Try to imagine in your minds eye a deer being watched by an unrelenting hunter.
It is deer season and there seems to be no where to hide but the deer by some
miraculous feat finds a brook and realizes the hunter has vanished.
Oh, how “thankful” the creature is for a cool spring to dip its parched mouth
in and drink! As the deer pants for the water brooks we to should pant for the
word of God.
Well friends, deer season comes once a year allowing for a reprieve from the
penetrating eye of the hunter. Satan comes around continuously, with no time
for vacations.
We as God's children are continually on the battlefield and if we are living
as God commands then we have no doubt become the devil's perpetual target.
Therefore Peter's admonition in 1 Peter 5:8, 9 reminds us of what kind of life
we should be living:
“ Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil as a roaring lion,
walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the
faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren
that are in the world”
Let us long for the water brooks of God's word so we don't find ourselves
living a defeated life.
