Different circumstances, same songs
“Your statutes are my songs in the house of my pilgrimage” [Psalm 119.54 NASB]
Instability and uncertainty were two designations, which, at certain periods in his life, described David’s life and behaviour. This description may fit our lives at this time? If so, what do we do?
Do you feel called to be a pilgrim? At this particular and unsettling time, David was living his life one day at a time. The place where he awoke would most certainly not be his resting place at night time. Why not? Saul and his men were some of David's most powerful and deadly foes. Wherever David looked he saw more danger and imminent death. Can we identify with him?
What did he do? Wherever David was, like Paul and Silas in prison, he sang psalms to the Lord. Are we capable of rejoicing in the most adverse and unpleasant circumstances? What was David's pattern and manner of life? Every day, as he researched his well-stocked spiritual memory, he found something to praise the Lord for.
What were some of these praiseworthy items? God had been faithful, regardless of what had happened. The God of all hope had deposited this quality in David's mind, so that, no matter what the external circumstances, like Elisha, David saw beyond what was natural and into the spirit realm.
In a majority of cases, David’s bedside companion was the word of the Lord. The comfort David was desperate for and received came to him as he meditated on God’s word. Brethren, no matter what is or has happened, Christ lives in you! Therefore, like David, we need to draw on His strength, grace, forgiveness and wisdom every day.
Are your circumstances unfavourable and totally unsatisfactory? So were David’s! Very often there was no change day-by-day; but, despite that, David grew sweeter and more tender-hearted every day. This pattern, which could be spiritually advantageous, has been outlined before you. [David McArdle]
