If you have ever done much driving, or gone on road trips, you have perhaps encountered the monotony of driving for a long time in the same terrain – hour after hour of winding turns, or miles upon miles of flat prairie or mesa with nothing different to stop the highway hypnosis from setting in. Even the every-day bumper-to-bumper traffic in the city can lull us to sleep at the wheel. We forget to stay alert as we journey on.
As I pondered this tonight, I began to think about the highway that we each travel in life. Even though in the difficult times we grit our teeth and cry out for change, how very boring it would be if our journey through life were always the same. I think that God allows our paths to take those winding curves, or detours when it appears that the bridge of our life is out and we cannot see a way across the raging water that loom before us.
Sometimes, those raging water events are financial challenges, other times they are health-related. Then there are the relational and familial struggles that test us to our very core.
God uses those times to jolt us from the highway of life hyposis, and remind us that we don’t know what lies ahead. But in our ignorance, we can rely on the God that does know the road He has placed before us. We can relax a bit and re-place our lives on cruise control, trusting that God will carry us through – one mile at a time.
