2010 & Children of Divorce in Schools Today
by Melineze Logan Hite
I have worked as a middle school and high school teacher, as well as a college professor; I began teaching in 1973.
Today, there are more and more parents who have decided to dissolve their marriages. Although this is undoubtedly very painful, there are significant effects on the children in school.
Unfortunately, the children are the ones hanging in the balance.
There are parents who actually believe that their separation or divorce has no "real effect" on their children.
This cannot be further from the truth.
The poor attention span, the lack of focus and concentration in academic studies, disrespect for adults, disrespect for the environment, and disrespect for themselves are just a few of the more significant, negative effects observed by educators of today's children of divorce.
I do not forsee things getting better in this highly technological age.
