Encouragement
It's funny. When we are children we are told to be obedient to our parents, and most of the time... we don't understand why. As adults, and parents, we expect our children to listen to what we have to say, take it into account, and follow the instructions to the letter... every 't' crossed and every 'i' dotted.
Do as I say. Listen to me. Did you hear me? What did I tell you to do? Are you deaf? These are things you may hear coming from the mouths of parents everywhere. These statements are not limited to one race or another... They are not specific to one country or another... These statements/questions definitely cross the oceans and ring at a resounding rate, on a daily basis, every moment of every day... I bet every second there is a parent somewhere saying something similar to their children all around the world.
Not that my children haven't had their listening ears on today, but this whole thing about being obedient has been on my heart lately. Disobedience from my children is not desired, nor accepted. When my children choose to blatantly disobey a direct command there are consequences. They can lose privileges, or be required to perform tasks that are undesirable (most of the time it involves cleaning something).
The feelings that come from having a child disrespect you can vary. The emotions can range from anger and disbelief to an attitude of 'oh well... kids will be kids'. (Personally, I do not find the later to be the case.) I have given birth to these children... "I brought you into this world, and I can take you out," as stated by Bill Cosby. I have given these kids everything they need, and want in most cases, and they will not even clean their rooms, take out the trash, separate their laundry (you get the point). These are simple requests, and they will not get to (fill in the blank) until it is done!!!
How do you think the Lord feels when He gives us specific direction, and we choose not to follow it?? When we have been praying about something and we hear from the Lord, and we decide it's too difficult, too time consuming, or just not something we are willing to do... What kind of reaction do you think God has?? Disappointment, anger, disbelief?? I can see Him now... shaking His head from side to side, thinking, "You asked, and I told you... what more do I have to do?? Why won't you listen to me??"
Or what if the Lord tells you to do something and it's not something you've been praying for?? What if you're just minding your won business, doing a Sudoku puzzle, or washing the dishes, or trying to sleep?? What if you don't 'ask' the Lord for direction, and He gives it anyway??
Well, my friends....
In both cases, solicited 'Word' or not, the answer is to OBEY THE LORD!!! Whether you've asked for direction, or God is commanding your direction, your response should be, "Yes, Lord!"
How in the world do we expect our children to be in a full-on, submissive, obedience, if we as adults cannot do so??
Just a thought...
