Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday October 12, 2010
As I was browsing over a few articles the other day I was captured by this statement by Ron Owen concerning the status of what was called Christendom for eighteen hundred years:
"It may well be revealed that the worst sin of the church at the end of the twentieth century has been the trivialization of God . . . We need a revival that will bring back reverence for who He is."
The Great Blonde wondered about the title, but when I explained that our concept of God has become as the concept of Grandmothers to their husband in comparison to Grandchildren, she said, "Oh, yes, I see now." And then remarked that hubby is becoming a smart guy.
When a culture becomes "Trinketarian" an attempt is made to rip God from His throne in heaven and put Him in your pocket, much as catching a fallen star.
Trinkets, while often having sentimental value are more often used as amulets and Webster's Online Unabridged gives this take on Amulet: a charm (as an ornament, gem, or relic) often inscribed with a spell, magic incantation, or symbol and believed to protect the wearer against evil (as disease or witchcraft) or to aid him (as in love or war).
That God has in the modern mind become a mere amulet is revealed by the oft heard whine, "Where is God when I need Him?" This is usually said in a tone of a plantation owner in a movie about the Old South asking the whereabouts of his slave.
In our time, God, has become a "something" that is so distant from our "reality" whatever that means, that millions feel the compulsion to carry something in their pocket or purse or wear as a reminder that God is there or if we touch it, we are giving God some sort of jolt and He will get with our program.
In our time even the Word has become little more than an amulet and rather than studying and hiding the Word, the message in our heart we use it, when we can find it, as a weapon, and holding it high in our hand while it is low in our heart, we find some verse and use it to command God to do our will and to do it right now.
The Prophet Isaiah held this concept until a time of great emotional pain when Uzziah, the Leper King died and amulets were exposed as worthless, Isaiah saw the Lord. Isaiah 6 tells the story. Is your concept of God one of awe or do you figuratively "carry Him around in your pocket or purse in case He is needed?"
