“And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18 (NKJV)
For a very long time I had held the erroneous notion that the church of the living God is under siege by the gates of hell such that the church is on the defence as darkness seems to bloom all the more around the globe and encroaches upon the church.
Now I know better, having been set free by the truth of the matter. Nobody fights by using a gate. A gate is meant to keep intruders outside of a property or area. Thus, it is liberating to see that the church is, in fact, on the advance so much so that we are at the very gates of hell! As the Message version of the Holy Bible puts it:-
“And now I'm going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.” Matthew 16:18 (The Message)
Thus, we can hear it said boldly that we are to “plunder hell and populate heaven”. And, that’s precisely what we ought to be doing after the example of Christ Jesus – “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” Acts 10:38 (NKJV)
With the anointing of God, we can all remove the gates of hell without the supernatural physical strength of Samson (Judges 16:3). We, who have the mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:16), are to bring light to those whose minds the god of this age has blinded (2 Cor. 4:4).
So where precisely are the gates of hell? In his book “The Supernatural Power of a Transformed Mind” (page 61) Pastor Bill Johnson provides this succinct answer: “You’ll recall from our discussion of renewing the mind that I called the mind the gatekeeper of the kingdom of God. It is the place of access, transition, and power. It follows that the gates of hell are set up in people’s minds.”
Our mind is the battleground; not a playground. This is where we need to break-free from the gates of all that is evil and wicked (e.g. unbelief, unrepentance, un-forgiveness, so on and so forth). As we win our battles, the light of Christ in us will brighten our atmosphere and sphere of influence, and we will become attractive to pre-believers.
Then, we can, by the anointing of God, really advance the Kingdom of God within us (break-out from the gates of hell) and in the lives of others (break-in the gates of hell). Be strong and very courageous. We’ve got to keep on fighting the good fight of faith, day by day in the knowledge that God is for us. We’re on the winning side!
