Larry Lilly's Letter Monday October 4, 2010
The week past brought grand news to me on several fronts, one a URL concerning the marriage of Henry Jones and Ruth Franz. Henry and Ruth are in their 80's or better, Henry survived a marriage of 60 plus years, Ruth never married, but is anxiously awaiting today. Henry and Ruth live in Connecticut.
The other, from a friend of near 50 years who also was married for over 60 years prior to his wife's departure for the land glorious. Now he is ga ga over a strikingly beautiful younger girl in the same assisted living ranch, who also sings soprano. Both of these couples are committed Christians and enjoy the things of the Lord. I think this is great, all things being equal.
In a newspaper article concerning today's planned wedding, Henry commented on one of the many things that make this day one of wonder and expectant joy.
"I love her dearly because of the way she thinks and the way she loves the Lord. We're singing off the same sheet and that’s all you could want in life."
Many couples "love each other dearly" and many actually think, and some love the Lord. But Henry and Ruth really have the something "extra" going for them, one thing that is missing in many relationships, romantic and otherwise. When this one essential is missing, the failure rate goes through the roof.
"We're singing off the same sheet."
For clarity's sake I must note Henry is referring to music sheets.
I pastor a relatively small church and over the last 21 years I have earned a Ph.D in the futility of people attempting to make beautiful music when two even similar but different "sheets" are in the mix. The soloist is holding a hymn book by one publisher and the pianist or more correctly, piano player, (A vast difference) is using one by another publisher. Each book is a good one, but the particular song is in a different key in each book. Cat's on the back fence sound more melodious.
In our relationships being on the same page is vital. In our walk with Christ learning to be on "His page" is absolutely essential. The trouble is that we usually use too much of our concert time (life) trying to get Jesus, the author of our song, to get with us instead of us getting off our high horse and singing His song along life's way. Only when we are "singing off the same sheet" will our life be in the correct key.
