The Bible That Would Not Burn
June 12, 2006
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
I want to share this post I had on my web site several years ago. This is a true story. I know, because I was there and participated.
The volunteer fire department of which Mary and I are members was called out one day to back up another fire department in a nearby neighborhood. The report on my radio was there was a house on fire. Two of our three trucks were enroute when Mary and I got to the firehouse. I took the remaining truck and Mary followed in my pickup truck.
Upon arriving at the scene of the fire it was obvious this house would not be saved. It was completely engulfed in flames. All of us firemen fought to extinguish the flames, and eventually we did, but not before the roof had caved in. After we had made sure all the flames were out, and it was safe for the owner to enter what was left of his house, we allowed him to do so. The owner was one of our neighboring ministers, and I watched as this man entered his house to see if anything was salvageable. I did not enter with him, for I was so exhausted all I could do was sit on the ground outside and rest for awhile.
After a few minutes the preacher came out with a big grin on his face. He was holding his Bible, from which he preached his sermons. He walked over to me and this is what he told me, “Everything in my house is gone except this Bible.” What he told me next sent chills up my spine. “This Bible was sitting on a little wooden table beside my chair. The table was burned out from under it.” Mary and I looked at this precious Bible which would not burn in the fire which destroyed everything else. The edges were singed, but the Bible was intact and readable, right down to the minister’s hand-written notes in the margins.
Have I ever seen a miracle? Yes, several, and this was a miracle that took place before several witnesses. God’s word is precious, and I believe He preserved that Bible that day to implant on our minds He takes care of it and preserves it. This physical copy of His written word would normally have burned to ashes, along with everything else. That day God chose that copy as one He would protect from the flames.
I was very pleased when I realized the old minister and I were about the same size. That was a great blessing to me, for I was able to share some of my clothing with him. Remember, everything else he owned was destroyed by fire. I gave him one of my Bibles, also, for I had a feeling he would want to take special care of the one that refused to burn. What a witness of the power of God to keep and preserve that which is his!
