I Weep Bitterly
Thomas Kittrell
June 14, 2006
And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly. Matthew 26:75
Within me my heart is full of pain
Tortured by what I have done
A few minutes ago to my shame
I denied my Master, God’s beloved Son
The sorrow is almost more than I can bear
And tears come like rivers down my face
He looked at me and I was torn apart
For He is going to the cross in my place
Those words of mine come back to haunt me
When I boasted, “I will not deny thee.”
Jesus knew all along I would be weak
He knew each of us would turn and flee
The sound of the cock when it crowed
I’ve never heard such a lonely sound
Three times I denied the One I followed
Now no consolation can be found
But Peter did find consolation and peace
Jesus loved Peter though he was weak
And Jesus loves each and everyone today
Who will make the choice His face to seek

Peter became a devoted and useful servant to Christ as the early church was started, and even suffered martyrdom. He never denied Christ again.
